It will be fun in November when we do the Paphos 10k run along there, plenty of leg supports needed i think!

Hello All,
Just returned back to England from two lovely weeks in sunny Cyprus.
We were down near the front daily but could not see much progress
from Tea for Two so your pictures Trev are still welcomed even though
we've been there.
Look forward to more updates.

Regards.

Gordon.

Hi Shell,

Yep, the promenade alterations are going on just to the front and to the right towards the Harbour of Porto Paphos Hotel. They are supposed to be 'finished' for May this year!!

This 'thread' will keep you informed of the progress

Hi,
Listening to the English News on Omega TV just now, there was some news of the work down at the Harbour. Apparently, the contractor is presently owed about 1 Million euros, and is threatening to stop work on the construction of the road unless he is paid by the Government! The Mayor is being reported as very concerned and is trying to get the Govt. to pay up. It was also said that when finished the road will be one way and there will be a walkway, new shop fronts, a kiosk and even a beach area!

Hi Dee. Thanks on behalf of all of us for the update from the local TV. So it may be that when I go round next Friday the place will be deserted.

I hope that the company get paid and that work will continue on time.

Best wishes. Trev..

Shell, hi just to say we stayed in the Porto Paphos hotel 2 years ago.
Great location great swimming pool but if you can, request and if necessary pay extra for a sea view.
Your room will look out over the harbour and catch the sunsetting.
I fyou get a room which is not sea view it will face onto a very noisy and busy road, though it may be a bit quiter once these harbour works are done, I don't know.
We had a room without sea view and after 2 nights changed to a room with a sea view, what a difference !
Enjoy, Gary

I think you are right to be concerned. There is currently no access to the road or beach behind the Porto Paphos Hotel (a former favourite where years ago we spent many happy holidays).

The work is supposed to be finished by May, but if there are delays you need a contingency plan. I would be tempted to put the problem to the tour operator and consider a relocation to (say) The Alexander The Great. It would be a shame if your first holiday in Paphos was blighted by uncompleted re-development work.

The Porto Paphos is really the only hotel affected by the works, which is behind the grey fence on the right of the picture. Rather more work has been done in the area between the fence and sea since the picture was taken, but the essential problem remains. The hotel, will of course benefit more than most from the work ... if it is completed on schedule.

I had another look at the Porto Paphos this afternoon. The hotel remains closed for the moment (most of the other hotels have now re-opened). As Trev's pictures show the block paving is moving on apace, so there is a good chance that it will be finished in two months, but there's still a lot of work to do on the shops. It's going to be tight.

Nice pictures Graham. Showing another nice sunny day. Not many people round the "Green" pool though

Let all hope that things are mainly finished during May. It will be a lot of inconvenience all round if not.

Harbour work

Postby Neilyboy » 25 Mar 2008 23:48

Hello all. My wife and I are due in Paphos in early June (it'll be our first time in Cyprus ). After booking our apartment and flights we found out that the harbour area was under reconstruction. I have to say that we're fairly relaxed about that kind of thing so it wouldn't necessarily put us off.

However, I just wanted to say that we found this forum three months ago and have found your regular updates and info very helpful and re-assuring, We log a couple of times every week and enjoy all your comments.

Keep up the good work, it's appreciated.

Counting down the weeks !

Good morning Neil. Welcome to CyprusLiving Forum. I personally enjoy taking the pics and posting them on the site, and i believe Graham, Jim and others do too. Jim created this site to help other people with as much info as we can give. If this helps some one to have a better holiday, or helps some one moving here, then that is good.

Hi Stephanie. I am glad that you are on the mend. I am sure that we will continue with the info and pics whenever we can.

Best wishes to All. Trev..

The harbour area is unaffected. It is the promenade between the harbour car park and the Porto Paphos hotel that is affected. Even if the work is not finished, it's only about 400 metres out of a whole island; and really only the sea front apartments and the Porto Paphos are directly affected. There is plenty to see and loads of places to walk - and if the contractors get their skates on, it may still all be finished on schedule - though experience tells me that it more likely may not be.

If they can keep cars out of the area (easier said than done) then it should become a welcome addition to the amenities of the resort, but as folks hereabouts lose their ability to walk as soon as they get their first car, it has the makings of a giant car park :( Time will tell.

The Pioneer is only about 3/4 mile up the road from the Porto Paphos and well away from the development work. Both hotels are a fair way from Paphos town, but there's a bus service every 20 minutes that stops almost at the front door and it is a pleasant walk along the beach to the harbour or the airport, if you feel like walking in the heat of August ;)

The Mayor of Paphos was on BFBS Radio talking about the Harbour Front Works [strangely he didn't mention Trev the Phoographer!]. He said the first phase will be finished end of May [also said many shops and restaurants were still open!!! eh, Brian?] Phase 2 will start in November until the following May. So looks like you could have the summer off, Trev!! Unless you take on the wine Tasting, of course!!

Good Afternoon All. Here I am again. I managed to take a good number of pictures again today, despite running about an hour late. Do you remember what I said earlier, about not seeking me out today.? Well one brave soul hung on till the last minute, and therefore I was able to meet up with one of our members... Derek Tee. Derek is from Ireland and we only had time for a very little chat due to me being late and Derek flying back to the UK today.
Knowing Derek I feel sure I can say the following with tongue in cheek. :)
He Has the luck of the Irish..... We had so little time that he was NOT able to buy me a KEO.
Seriously, it was nice to meet up with him.

There is as you will see, more and more going on each week, but even today you could see where the sea water had been washing onto the cobbles....OK. Now here are the pics.

great pix

Postby larsson07h » 28 Mar 2008 17:12

Wow Trev

great pix as usual - still very concerned about the sea wall or lack of it and it certainly seems to be oneway - how will the locals cope as we all know they ignore oneway and no entry signs.

other than that i'm optimistic it will be finished as looks to be progressing a lot quicker now.

We'll be over in our apartment at the end of may and drinking with Vas in Zorros. Would be happy to buy you a Keo or three if you are there as a thank you for your excellent work.

Hi Trev,

Great Pics...Sterling work as usual.

In the fourth picture it seems that you may have dropped your hat and a worker has found it!...or are they that used to seeing you they all give you a friendly wave?

They do seem to be making progress albeit a little slow...it will look 100% better when eventually finished

Have a good weekend!

Two added pics just for those in the UK.(but nothig to do with the harbour) We in Cyprus take it for granted that the Motorway to Limassol will be vertually empty as in this lunchtimes pics. It is certainly nothing like the UK ones.

Just for UK interest.......

I wonder if anyone has noticed that the workers are laying
the pavement nearest to the sea first.
There is a reason for this!

They ( the workers ) are frightened that they will get some
aggro. grief, name calling or whatever when the barriers come down.

So to avoid any conflict with the local traders, they decided to lay the opposite side first. When the seaside pavement is finished, they will start on the shop side ( barriers still up ) and continue until finish and only then " the barriers " will come down...

or so I've been told...........

Trev

Can you clarify something for me from today's photo's. In the 5th photo there appears to be a small building at the end of the near the cafes etc. Is this the case.

I thought the only building would have been the replacement paper kiosk where the Time Share touts congregate.

Would appreciate it if you can clarify.

Don't worry if don't have time, we are coming across on Tuesday so we will be able to check it out for oursleves.

Look forward to joining the crowd following you next Friday.

Do we all need special tee shirts to show we are all your supporters.

Hi John. As far as I am aware the concrete building on pic 5, and also on 8 and 9, is the replacement for the old paper kiosk. It has been moved a little nearer to the harbour admittedly. It has been mentioned that it is a strange building (too much concrete) for a kiosk. So...nothing is certain, we will have to wait and see.
I hope you have some nice weather when you are here, and keep a look out for me on Friday.

Came back today on the last GB Airways flight. The plane tail was white ready for the orange logo tomorrow. What a glorious week, bet you never spotted me - a tourist - in my shorts. I enjoyed a breakfast this morning in the new Tea for Two, and had a quick sneak through the fence at the works. We then walked round to the buy sell cyprus office and sneaked into the seafront. I asked in one of the shops in the small square by the dive centre about the reconstruction of the sea wall etc. Don't know was the answer. The man did say that it is supposed to be finished by May 17th, if not then the front shops get compensation. He is struggling to survive as new tourists do not realise the square exists. All the shops along the front are going to get an extra 6ft of selling space as compensation and new frontages. He also said that Aristo had taken over the works this week due to the previous contractor not being paid. Not sure if that's true or not though. Aalso said it is going to be one way traffic only. I thought the waterfall being made by pinguino looks nice and so do all the silver bollards to stop the cars parking on the kerbs. Not back for another 8 weeks so can't wait til Fridays pictures as usual. By the way Trev, how do you get past the grouchy security people to get your snaps?

Hi Comet. I am glad that you enjoyed your break here. The weather is a little cooler at the present. Your letter with the "Info" you gained from asking around, has added a little bit more to the Jigsaw.
I was not aware that the shops were getting extra selling space as compensation. In fact, I thought that I had heard that if they wanted to move out to the forecourts/pavements that they would have to pay extra. But this is only hearsay. I did read that a contractor was complaining that he had not been paid, but have not seen anything about Aristo taking over.
Re your statement....."I thought the waterfall being made by pinguino looks nice and so do all the silver bollards to stop the cars parking on the kerbs."

I have not seen anything like this anywhere about, and would appreciate if you could try to tell me where to look for these Items. Are they in the new road works.
With regards to the "grouchy security people". I have only ever seen a man on duty at either end of the roadworks. Although i do take an odd picture from the rose corner end, I only step in a yard or so.
A lot of the other picture locations are found by wandering around the backs of the shops, and just being cheeky and going through to the works. Some as you can tell are taken from the top floors of buildings, and if someone is there I usually ask permission to take the pics.

All being well I will be back there next Friday.

Best Wishes. Trev..
