Hi Graham. Yes I too rely on Picasa 2. However I only reduce my pics to 1024 pixels, mainly because that is the best size for my wide-screen laptop. I will just have to have more patience.

Any one reading this who has plenty of pics but NOT got Picasa 2... Do give it a try, it's good.

Looking at picture 9 looks like they are going to be laying the blocks all
over the road, on previous weeks it looked like that was going to be the road, picture 12 you can see curbs put in. How confusing, will look forward to next weeks installment maybe they will just paint yellow lines over it.(lol)

It is proposed that there will be one way traffic towards the harbour and I have heard it suggested that the traffic will be limited to buses.

If this is the case, my next question would be how do they propose to keep the rest of the traffic out of the pedestrian area? I saw one clown driving up the new unfinished footpath around the lighthouse headland (picture below) this afternoon, and the barrier at the far end has already been broken open, apparently caused by collision with a vehicle.



Whenever the barriers have been left unattended, there has always been some fool who has driven onto the redevelopment site, only to have to turn back. Usually a tourist who obviously doesn't understand that a barrier across the road and a road closed sign, might actually mean that the road is closed.

Even if they manage to keep the cars out with barriers, then that will not stop the motorcycles or, worse, the quad bikes. (I notice car hirers are all stocking up with new quad bikes for the coming holiday season)

There does not appear to be any indication that the sea wall will be replaced, though I am informed there will be seating provided (which will probably be moved, as on the harbour, to make room for restaurant tables). I suppose they may erect a railing, but I wouldn't count on it. Here people are expected to look where they are going, and frankly the sea is hard to miss.

The work is scheduled for completion on May 19th, so it should soon be apparent how it will all look. In the meantime some idea of what the new glass and steel verandas will look like can be seen at the kiosk.

Hi Louise. People at the moment are just "second guessing" from the pictures that other people and myself are providing. As we have said.... we will have to wait and see.

Hi Tracie. Yes it would appear that the roadway and the pavements are all being done with the blocks. And what appears to be the shop forecourts are being tiled. You may see the ladies doing the grouting with buckets and spreaders.

Again.......we will have to wait until it is finished. One thing that photo's do provide is a better idea than the written word!!

There is still work to do behind the barriers.

Hot News... I see in Grahams last picture he has caught a snap of a section of the new railings. This is obviously laid flat on the floor but will be bolted upright on top of the new wall.

I'd heard a suggestion that there will be automatic barriers in place at either end of the "new one way stretch" which would rise to allow only buses through, similar to current systems at Glasgow Airport and no doubt other like places.

Just love this banter but take issue with Graham’s comment. Usually a tourist who obviously doesn't understand that a barrier across the road and a road closed sign, might actually mean that the road is closed.

As a tourist I am recommended to mix with the locals and join in with their life to “experience the Real Cyprusâ€￾. So can I assume this is where I have gone wrong in the past? Next time I will follow a local down the brick road with the possibility I may end up with yet another closed road!

Having looked at the workmanship in the flesh, rather than on a photograph, it is difficult to imagine how individual granite cobble stones could have been laid better - there will inevitably be gaps between them and this is being filled with a sand/cement dry mix which will set hard when the humidity levels rise a bit.

Whether granite cobble stones were the best choice for a pedestrian area, I reserve judgement, but they will be infinitely better than the broken and worn concrete slabs and mish mash of shop front footpaths that were there before. If they can keep vehicles out of the area, it will be a dramatic improvement to the promenade area.

I hope the powers that be have a reserve of euro's for ongoing maintenance. I dread to think what the surface will look like in a years time after the tourist invasion of tyre rubber - grease and oil - chewing gum and dog ends. But at least we will get to see it in its virginal state befor the onslaught.
But on a more positive note, it is going to be a vast improvement on what was there last year, as that area was looking very tired and neglected.
So from the 22nd to the end of May my Friday task will be to spot Trev and his trusty camera

The block paving looks nice... for how long? We have block paving in the centre of Stroud. It looked fab at first, until the electricity co. came and dug it up and relaid it with newer bricks. Then came the water board, followed by the gas board and others. Its been dug and patched up so many times, the roads now resemble granny's patchwork guilt!

Seen that before....

The automatic barriers at Glasgow Airport are the more conventional ones, similar to those at Paphos Airport.

But it would be a lot more fun to have some like those on the video

They have the auto-barriers in Cambridge town centre, restricting some streets to only licenced cabs and emergency vehicles... They regularly catch a few tourists...

Also saw some Japanese tourists 'impaled' at the entrance to Edinburgh castle.... trying to scoot into the castle itself with their car.... their faces were a picture!

Hi Everyone. I went to the harbour area again today and took a good number (33) of photographs. There has obviously been some improvement since last week, but there is still a lot to do at the McDonalds / Seagull end. That's the end where I started today and finished up at the new Kiosk on the promenade.
There are no signs of any barriers, and I think if they were going to be the ones that rise up out of the road, we would be able to see some preparatory work.

Did you notice what I thought to be the one-way road is now being filled in with granite blocks.

Doesnt seem to be any kerbs/ etc to mark the difference between road and walkway.

Hi Andy, and Glen. As I think you know is says it will be finished in May, but not which day. If you are over at the later end of the month you may see it finished. But I wouldn't bet on it.

MM... As you have noticed, there are hardly any kerbs. But they never keep vehicles of the pavements, even when there is.

Hi Lesley. If you mean the buildings in picture 3, these WERE a cafe, toilets and I think showers. These buildings have not been knocked down but "Altered". It is possible that they will be the same again.

Pics 8 and 9 are of a new Kiosk. The old one was nearer the corner and has been replaced I believe.

Hi DJS. Almost all the shops on the front are still closed. The pic shows Rose corner, with the barriers to the left and the closed shops to the right.

The pic is a bit "grainy" because it is "zoomed in"




If it looks a bit "strange" to you, that is because all the extensions that were at the front have been stripped away. All this has yet to be sorted out.

The road works may be finished on time, but the rest certainly won't. A recent TV News report sugegsts there has been a cock-up over the 'paperwork' relating to the street lighting, which means that the street lighting will not be erected by the 19th. The Mayor of Paphos suggested that the old street lighting would be re-erected as a temporary measure. I guess this assumes that the old lighting has not been scrapped and will fit the new concrete lamp bases set into the road?

This is the same Mayor of Paphos who suggests that when the water runs out (because he has not implemented the cuts affecting most of the rest of the island) he will dig more wells

It also seems unlikely that all the shops can be completed in time and the new building near the PortoPafos hotel has not started beyond the concrete base yet. There must be at least 6 months construction involved to make that a viable building using traditional methods. Rumour has it that the building may have something to do with the sea bathing facilities, but I have not been able to confirm that yet.

The little bit of rough weather we had last week had seawater crashing over the new sea 'wall' so there may have to be a rethink there if real winter storms are not to have the new roadway and the shops beyond flooded.

Hi Trev, thanks for pics, could the new kiosk possibly be for a TIME SHARE BOOTH!!!!!!!!, I will be looking for you next week when we are over, could you walk around with a newspaper under your arm, wasnt it the daily mirror who used to do that with someone. I remember at home during the summer months, Morecambe used to have someone on the promenade from one of the daily papers, if you spotted him he gave you a fiver. Ah!!, those were the days. Pauline

Only a couple of weeks until May. Will it all be finished or is it the usual Cyprus ongoing mess for another few months.
I note the Paphos Mall is opening in Spring 2008 that looks unlikely as well.
At least the airport is on schedule or maybe ahead. Shows what can happen when you keep Government out of things!!!

Not just for Neil but all viewers.

The "Rose Corner" end is almost finished (see general pics). But until all the roadway and pavements are done the road cannot be opened. Even then a number of shops and restaurants will probably still require work on the shopfronts.

Whether the powers that be will allow pedestrian access from the Rose corner end before all the works are finished remains to be seen. but this would allow some premises to open for business again. IMHO the answer would be NO!!

There were huge numbers of workmen employed on the site today and I would be very surprised if the blockwork and footpaths were not completed on time (19 May). Even at the Seagull end (the Seagull is I believe now open in the evenings) the paths are at a good stage of completion.
The new kiosk, I understand, is the replacement for the old 'To Limanaki' kiosk.


They even had the fountain running today
