Hi All. Well we have reached the momentous point of 50,000 Viewings of the "Paphos Harbour Works" thread.
Thank you to all who have shown so much interest, in what has been happening over here in the Winter and Spring months............WELL DONE TO EVERY ONE INVOLVED.

For my part I have enjoyed providing the Friday photographs, and will no doubt continue for a while longer. I was asked today what I was going to move onto when the promenade was all finished???

I wonder how I get into that MALL...??

Hi Tracie. I have Zoomed in on the notice and you will see the Euro prices written in black. Places are still supposed to display both prices until the end of June. Bear in mind the places have only just opened since before we changed from the CY£ to the Euro.
I think most places in the town now display the Euro first.

Hi Mark. I must admit that area was one that in the past I did not get to very much. So, I cannot comment upon how many steps there were.
I have looked at previous pictures in my file and the one below show them raising the levels outside some shops by a considerable amount.

They didn't. They removed Athos Jewellers (newsly installed) frontage and replaced it!

Hi Trev, we have been watching your pics very closely as we are due to arrive back in Paphos next month. Do you think that the majority of work will be complete by then?

On a diferent note, whats happened to prices and the cost of living now that the Euro is in place?
How much is a pint of keo in a typical bar, say Zorros bar?
You can usually bench mark everything against a pint of beer

The chances of all the work being finished by next month or even by the end of the summer are very slim, but you will have pedestrian access to the sea front and I am sure you can live without the few tacky tourist shops and restaurants that don't get fixed in time.

The cost of living has not changed, except for a few key products that reflect the rise world commodity prices e.g. fuel and bread. What has changed is the value of the pound sterling against the Euro, so you will see effective price rises of around 20%.

There are some photo's today of the work, in the 'hot dog thread' most of the heavy work looks completed, although a Cypriot gentleman showed me some damaged caused by a few small waves, loosened lots of brick paving also washing out some of the grouting, I hope all this work can stand a good storm, we do get them now and again..

A few years back when they did similar work near the fort was badly damaged during a storm in this area...

beer well about €2.50..most places..

I don't understand your comments about burglars? What did this have to do with my picture showing that the jeweller's newly tiled forecourt had been removed (by the re-development contractors) to be integrated with the new paving?

sorry KG misunderstanding. I read in the newspaper that a jewellery shop was broken into and I thought your pictures was a new one, but now I see it was taken before Trev's latest pictures.

So, indeed nothing to do with paving etc.

Hi All
We had the pleasure of meeting the star of this thread on Friday during his weekly episode. We offered to buy Trev a pint but he said he had to rescue his wife from the clutches of Orphanides so couldn't risk being too long.

The front looks good and seems a lot wider than it used to when you walk along it. Would be a shame to spoil it with traffic.

Good to meet you Trev and look forward to seeing your weekly updates, as I know many others do.

Hi all. I have a bit of a story to tell you today, and then 11 pictures. You will maybe match some of the story to the pics.

As you in Paphos area will know we had a storm last night. When we awoke in Polemi this morning we had no Internet. A phone call produced the fact that CYTA had problems with supplying the Internet. So when we went out I was not sure if I would be able to put the pics on or not. As you can see now all is OK. We have other ongoing building problems and we were in the Land Registry for a while this morning. When we came out we went to the "Karlina" for a spot of lunch. Whist eating my soup I suddenly realised I had not been to take the Friday pictures......
So we went to the harbour car park and Hilary waited in the car whilst I went off with my camera....(can't disappoint the public).
Whilst I was on the promenade I met Brian, Memory Man. And also a couple from Kent in the UK called. Wendy and Barry. I was sorry that I had so little time because I had left my wife waiting, and I hope Wendy and Barry understood.
Whilst on the promenade I was given some insight from the shop keepers point of view. I was told that at a very recent meeting between the shop keepers and the council they were told what extensions they may have at the front of their shops. They are only allowed to cover and use the tiled area at the front, and the extensions will all be the same design. I think they will have a glazed roof and part solid and part glass sides and folding front screen. I was shown a tiled frontage of about 3x3mts and that the shop keepers had been told the cost for that was to be CY£25,000.

Also I believe they can take out their tables and chairs to the waters edge as on the Harbour, but again at an extra cost. It seems like a hard deal for a lot of people who have already struggled through the last six months.

So..... on to the pictures.

Hi Mike. It has always been said that there will be one way traffic. I am not sure where this information is from but I have accepted it. The problem is how much traffic. Just buses one way? Buses and Taxis, one way?? or all traffic one way??? The problem will be stopping people parking where ever they want to, as in the rest of Paphos. As we have said before............ Time will tell.

One added little bit to my main Friday posting. I was also told that the patches / holes near the sea that have been filled roughly ARE for the lights.

Hi Tracie. It certainly does look good and deserves a mention on this thread. I know that they have had all new sliding widows put in and also a completely new tiled floor, and of course repainted.
I know all this because it is the upstairs vantage point for some of my photographs.
It certainly looks like a good place to have a meal or a few drinks. Maybe we should try it sometime.

On close inspection I saw some smaller holes rough filled and marked with purple paint and further back from sea front roughly just on the landward side of the palm trees with 4 conduits projecting in one case. Surely these are for the lights as they are quite a distance apart and would illuminate the carriageway and pedestrian areas. The larger holes at regular 3m approx centres close to the sea front look like they have to be for guard railing stanchions? It's the only sense I can make of it. But as you always say we shall have to wait and see. If they allow restuarant seating to extend out to the sea front then railings would make sense. Even down at the harbour there is a slight guard wall to contain seating and those using them. My money is on stainless steel horizontal rails with stancions built into cobbles at about 3m centres on the seaward side of the palms with lighting stanchions bolted down to cobbles and forming the trip hazard that they do elsewhere on bar street etc. on the landward side of the palms... we shall see!

We had a small seaborne storm two weeks ago, nothing that would stop me sailing, if I had a sail boat, but the waves actually brought some of the brick cobbles up, I fear that a good winter storm will do a lot of damage...so workmanship down there looks a little thin on the ground so to speak..

Seriously.... I have seen the holes that have filling in about 3 or 4 metres apart and one metre from the edge.



I cannot make my mind up what they are for. Surely to far from the edge for railings? To near together for lights!!! What about seating?

With reference to the storms moving the blocks, it would not be a surprise to me.

If they do have a problem with the stormy seas, they could do what some UK resorts have done.......
