In his workshop in London, Scotsman John Logie Baird achieved the transmission of the first television pictures using the head of a dummy as his image source.. He then persuaded a 15 year old office boy, William Taynton, to sit in front of a camera, becoming the first live person captured on camera.

11th October 1918

Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month", in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning.

Have a Party With Your Bear Day

Image

Have a Party With Your Bear Day is observed on November 16, 2015. Just spend some time with your Teddy Bear und have a party with it including balloons and a cake! The teddy bear is a soft toy in the form of a bear.

Since the creation of the first teddy bears which sought to imitate the form of real bear cubs, "teddies" have greatly varied in form, style and material. They have become collector's items, with older and rarer "teddies" appearing at public auctions. Teddy bears are among the most popular gifts for children and are often given to adults to signify love, congratulations or sympathy.

The name Teddy Bear comes from former United States President Theodore Roosevelt, who was commonly known as "Teddy" (though he loathed being referred to as such). The name originated from an incident on a bear hunting trip in Mississippi in November 1902. (With material from: Wikipedia)

Harry Belafonte was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Mary's Boy Child,' the first single to sell over 1 million copies in the UK. It stayed at No.1 for seven weeks making it this years Christmas No.1. The first Christmas song to hit No.1 in two different versions - the other was Boney M's version in 1978

May 16th 1936

Daphne Kearley became the first – and only – pre-Second World War British air hostess

Paid £12 a month, she worked for a company called Air Dispatch flying on an Avro 642 between Croydon airport and Le Bourget in France.

Only two of the Avro 642 planes were ever built. The one with twin propellers flew to France, while the four-prop version eventually became the Viceroy of India’s plane.

Kearley’s duties covered a range of activities, including providing typing skills, taking dictation and producing letters for business passengers. Airline meals usually consisted of smoked salmon and caviar – a far cry from much of today’s fare in economy class.

Kearley, aged just 19, was clearly a hit with the passengers – she reputedly received 299 airborne proposals of marriage during her 10 months as Britain's first air hostess.

The plane on which Kearley flew – which had seats for 16 passengers and included a lavatory – had its last British flight doing a sightseeing trip over the Queen Mary passenger liner. It was then sold to Mandated Airlines in Australia, and came to a dramatic end when it was destroyed by Japanese forces in January 1942 during their invasion of New Guinea.

Royal London has its roots in the community. Founded in 1861, it began with the aim of helping people avoid the stigma of a pauper’s grave.
