Vehicle Crash Scam

Postby Jim B » 24 Jan 2015 09:13

The Missus was talking to some of her Russian friends last night and it appears one of them was driving in her BMW in Paphos when another car swerved in front of her and then jammed the brakes on causing her to run into the back of it. Three men then jumped out and started threatening her and demanding money for the damage; sensibly she locked the car doors and called the police. On seeing her on the phone the three jumped back in their car and drove off; that's as much as I know at the moment so just a warning to be aware this scam has arrived in Cyprus.

A similar thing happened to MOH in U.K., waiting on a side road, the land rover in front started moving, so MOH did too, they suddenly stopped and our car just nudged them! it didn't even knock the mud off their tow bar! We knew nothing more until some months later shopping around for a new car insurance, we were informed there had been a claim against us. It transpired this person had claimed damages of £100 but we hadn't been informed. When we got a requested copy of the bill, the garage didn't exist! Naturally we were angry that the insurance company hadn't approached us first. They obviously knew their way around the system.

Simple, don't tailgate like a Cypriot & you will be able to stop. In any circumstances where you hit the car in front, it is your fault.

Won't upset me as Liverpool is a City. Us Scousers know how to look after ourselves. ;)

I notice the lowest claims are in Scotland. Probably due to the lack of impact injuries when riding an Aiver. :))

An incident over here not long ago (sadly one of many) a 38 seater bus faced the same scenario. 38 whiplash injury claims & all but one got compensation. They found he wasn't even on the bus at the time
To protect the possible identity of the claimants rights I refuse to disclose their origin except to say it was a place not instantly recognisable :?:

That forward looking camera idea is starting to appeal

But in the event of an accident, is video admissible now as evidence because it wasn't before?

Jeanne

I don't know if it's admisable in court but would suggest that it would point the Police or insurance in the right direction.

For Lincoln and Rigsby.

As I said in the my first post, the lady driver wasn't tailgating, the other car swerved in front of her and hit the brakes; a totally different scenario.

If you are talking about 'Superhome Centre' in Paphos............they don't!!!
I spoke to staff from the Assistants up to the Manager this morning and they said they have never had them.
Do you mean maybe Paphos Homemarket or somewhere else?

It might be worth checking with your insurance company and or the traffic police. Although you may not agree, in every circumstance where you hit the car in front, you are at fault. Any accident assessor will tell you this.

Maramike I found this one on Direct Deals but it looks like the offer is ending soon. Not sure about the make. http://www.directdeals.com.cy/index.php/frontend/campaigns/single/2068/Kamera-Autokinitou

The other place I would try is Nicolaides in Paphos town - he usually has the latest gadgets.

In-car dash cam's

Postby emgee » 17 Feb 2015 19:04

I've been watching the "Car crash" programmes on TV lately and it seems that an in-car camera is the new must-have accessory. Does anyone know if you can buy them in Cyprus? Mind you, I saw one advertised in a TV Magazine which almost obscured the left-hand side of the windscreen.

Bought one of these last week.
Works ok so far and has several features the more basic ones do not. Good picture quality.
Amazon now say they do not sent this to Cyprus, which was not stated when I ordered. They were quite happy to courier it with a home address in Cyprus, but not to a P O Box. Arrived within 2 days!

Hi Mike, that's almost certainly because it's "Dispatched from and sold by EPRANCE" - one of Amazon's vendors, and not Amazon itself. Some vendors do deliver to Cyprus, but many don't.

I have the Transcend DrivePro 200 that I got from Amazon. Picture quality is very good but if you go to www.techmoan.com there's a video review of this plus a number of other dash cams.
Well worth having, especially over here.

The topic then wash "vehicle crash scam", not "in-car cameras", however, they were mentioned. Seeing the TV programmes brought the use of cameras to my attention more than I would have thought so before.

Definately interested now.

Understood and agreed - But, in this case the item specifically showed 'This item can be delivered to Cyprus'. I input my Cyprus PO Box address and the order was accepted. After two weeks I was still being told that the item would be delivered. Only when I asked them what was going on was I told it could not be delivered to a P O Box, but could be to a house address (??). I gave my address and it was delivered to UPS in Paphos two days later.
I notice the details for the item now say it cannot be delivered to Cyprus, so clearly confusion between the supplier and Amazon!
In answer to someone's point about obscuring vision, this model is very neat and with it located on the windscreen behind the rear view mirror does not present a problem.

The cam I bought was 10 quid off ebay , didn't expect much at that price , but it does a good job .

On the 1080 setting it used 3gb for half an hour recording. I only have a class 4 card at the moment , which worked ok , but they do recommend class 6 to class 10 .

So do you have to switch it on to record for every journey you make as you leave the house, just in case of accidents?

If it is any good it should start and stop recording with the ignition - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LWOq62cY6U for a typical device. This model has been superceeded but the video is a good one.

Pretty sure the same is available for iphone.

Bear in mind that the reason we no longer display tax disks in cars is because it is an offence to have anything that blocks your view through the windscreen.

It is quite possible that your footage of the accident will do nothing more than provide the evidence for you to be prosecuted for blocking your screen.

If you are going to get a dash cam I would suggest looking at something a little more discreet.

While that was the speculated reason, I suspect it was more to do with the fact that the traffic police all have computer access to the register of which vehicles are taxed, so the disc becomes redundant.

Do you know of anyone who has been prosecuted for having a tax disc in the windscreen? I have been stopped several times for roadside checks since the change and the police didn't even comment about the fact that my tax disc is displayed. They just checked my registration details with their hand-held devices.

Even if you are correct, many of the cameras around are small enough to fit behind the mirror. The Mobius camera I have on order is not much larger than a key fob.

E-PRANCE® New G1W Novatek 2.7" Car Dashcamera

Just bought two E-Prance dash camera's for our two small motors, not had a chance to fit them as yet but will do so soon and review them here, one point Amazon mostly would not deliver to Cyprus, obviously I did find a seller who would do so on Amazon, unfortunately it cost about a tenner more to buy from them, a problem we have living here and using Amazon, have to say they sent using UPS two day service, excellent!, by the way I also ordered two 32GB HC SD micro cards, don't as mine came with both..

Utube warn buyers that there are copies that seem cheap on EBay they tell you how to see the difference, easy way is the real E-Prance cameras have HDMI output sockets to plug into your TV...a warning I heeded.

UTube review of the E-Prance dash cam.
