Not only for archaeologists

Postby cyprusmax47 » 05 Jul 2016 10:11

There are excavations on the Island of Yeronisos, Agios Gerogios, Peyia, quite a time now,
which I find very interesting. The place could be as old as Maa in Coral Bay.
Very good overview from the Drone...

Obviously no one is interested in the subject, but
thank you for your praise Jim. It is apparently more easy to talk about pegs (1152 clicks!!)

Brilliant, my kids often play at the cliffs opposite the island or fly their kites where you started your flight. I often thought if I were a bit fitter I would swim across to investigate...

Thanks for sharing, A.

Wow that is brilliant! Think I may have seen you out with your drone the other day along sea caves. I was walking my dogs one morning, early.
Allan, or hey fabulous guy, I answer to both!

(Albert) Max do not be disappointed some members never look past the main forum, and the reason I set up this section, they do not know what that are missing, their loss I feel...keep them coming please. :-bd

If you go to page 10 of this section you will see I was out there on my own, I did stick with it though..

Max - great video, as is your other posting.

Jim - one of the problems is that this part of the forum is underused. I saw Jules' video of Varosha last week, posted a reply (and question) only to find that the OP had been moved, without indicating where to. Somehow, encouragement should be made to visit the lesser used pages, which, like this one, contain great stuff.

BTW, my question posted on Jules' video of Varosha, was what is the difference between Varosha and Ammochostas? No reply yet!

Keep up the good work, everyone.

Just like photos I do move them into sections dedicated for this, Video is the same, if they are left on the main forum they will move downwards very quickly, so this is where they should be posted. Jim

I should have added, for the benefit of others, that the posting by Jules was originally on the General page.

At the risk of getting something a little technically incorrect.
I live in Deryneia which is the closest coastal village to Varosha and Famagusta, in the Ammochostos or Famagusta administrative District of eastern Cyprus.
The main Admin districts in Cyprus being Pafos, Limassol, Nicosia, Larnaca and Ammochostos (for that read Famagusta - it very much depends on the views/sensitivities of the people talking about the subject) albeit Famagusta town is in fact north and across the green line.
Varosha is the area south of Famagusta Town and next to Deryneia. Varosha is located in or to the north of the green line and contains most of the old tourist Hotel strip of - Famagusta itself.
Varosha has pretty much been a ghost town since 1974, with the occupants being driven out. One, maybe two of the Hotels are reportedly used by the Turkish military as R&R centres for its forces, and rows of beach sunbeds etc can be seen on some drone filmage, There is NO public access into the area and all the drone flights and movies you may find on youtube these days run the risk of being shot down by someone or other.
The return of Varosha is a key element in any negotiations on the islands future. The coastal strip of land between Famagusta Port running south towards Deryneia and the Kapparis area of Paralimni probably the best beach fronts anywhere in Cyprus. The much reported but yet to open crossing point at Deryneia is literally 2km as the crow flies from my house.
That's my take on it!

Many thanks, bromerzz. Appreciate the time taken to give me a detailed explanation. I had a feeling that the answer might be historical.
