Wellgoods..Steak

Postby robnsharm » 08 Dec 2012 19:43

after reading the comments about this shop, we bought a piece of vacumed packed American silverside a few weeks ago..it was the best beef Ive eaten.

Tonight I cooked some of their rump...not only was it the most tender steak Ive cooked it also had such fantastic flavour.
Tomorrow Im trying the chicken breast.

Totally agree, and perhaps you should try their salmon fillets too, they are the best for flavour.

If travelling along TOTK road from Lidl you turn left AFTER Begonia Garden centre/new mall. This is Mr Chicken Road. Garden of Eden is the large Russian super/fruit market on the right begore you can turn right to Universal. Wellgoods is on the right about 100 yards after this turning. It has a green fascia which says "Wellgoods Cypressa".

We had some pre packed Gammon steaks, I would say OK but cut far too thinly cut for me.

Black Aberdeen Angus steak best I have found at Kilios butchers Polis road, just perfect..

The best frozen salmon fillets I have found anywhere are those from Lidl. It is one of the best products they sell. price is competitive and they are frequently on offer. Strongly recommended.

Kolios use the same supplier as Jim Peck and the steaks are always perfect, although I find Jim's prices slightly cheaper. I will try the Wellgoods ones aswell.

Got some lovely gammon steaks from lidl last week, English, 2 in a pack, quite thick, unsmoked and not too salty.

It is so good that folks posting on this site are so very helpful.

Yes aware Jim gets the same meat from the same supplier, BUT I like to have really thick steak not pre packed stuff, so I can chose the thick steak, it cooks better. And yes it is expensive but you must treat yourselves now and again. Personally not found Kolios or Jim Pecks to be miles apart on pricing it is all expensive.

Now Pork Pies any recommendations? some have been saying the best are at the Sausage Factory, never been there as yet.

Jim Peck cuts his as you like so not pre packed - I too like a thick slab otherwise it's not worth it! Kolios easier for you Jim as they're nearer just like Jim Peck is for me, however if Im passing I'll pop into Kolios for their lovely chicken liver pate if I'm feeling too lazy to make my own!

Pork pies - can't beat the ones from Upper Crust on the coast rd in Kissonerga, small or large crisp pastry with just the right amount of jelly and moist meat.

Last time I was at Jims it was pre packed Vicky..

Nothing in it regarding distance. Just prefer Kolios all the prices are there to be seen, nice new layout too.

I will give ''upper crust'' a try this week. thanks

I have just tried ''upper crust'' pork pies, and yes they are excellent, two large round pies on Christmas order.....

We only started to go to Wellgoods recently following recommendation from a friend. We like their Rib Eye steaks which we have found to be excellent quality. We also find their frozen raspberries , summer fruits, etc. good quality and good value.

We are not a meat eating family. One exception is for turkey at Christmas. As I am the only one eating it I usually buy a turkey breast fillet from Debenhams, but it is hit or miss whether they have any on the day. I have never been to Wellgoods, Has anyone seen any turke fillet there.

Never had pre packed from him, he just doesn't do it unless it's something in a marinade which needs to be in a tray with cling film around it - it's all there on show like at Kolios!

Just had a thought though, maybe he did in his old shop which I rarely went to.

All three Butchers are very good and in our case it comes down to the fact that we are near Kolios more frequently. Have to say the other week I had an Angus Rib Eye from there which was the best steak I have ever had in Cyprus. Got two more this week, also noticed that they are doing what they call think Two Breast Turkey which really a crown. Might have got one but we have already ordered a Duck.

Just to clarify, that it is the SECOND turning left after Begonia gardens. The Junction you need to go left at, has traffic lights and a big church on the right.

The wife bought Turkey Breast at Alpha Mega yesterday and occasionally buys them from Butchers Boy; we much preferr them to the full Turkey. If I remember correctly you can also buy Turkey Drumsticks from Alpha Mega as well

Wellgoods only a very small shop, have loads of great foods in stock and at very completive prices. Butter 1-45. Cheddar cheese at least €2 cheaper than anywhere else. 1Kg of frozen prawns with the tail, on, absolutely delicious when lightly cooked. Lamb chops & Lamb joints . Frozen chicken breast, they look like hugh chunks of frozen cardboard, but do not let this put you off, when cooked they are absolutely delicious. Plus all the other good buys that have been previously posted.

In my wife’s opinion this is the best litle shop on town for a food bargain and it can so easily be combined with the great veg shop 300 metres just down the road.I who hate shopping but would entirely agree with her.

We have used wellgoods in the past and found their steak very good and many of their other products as well.
The best steak we have bought recently was from the frozen fish shop on the coast road, black Angus ribeye, flavour unbeatable. They have fresh in most weeks but also have frozen.. The flavour is in no way impaired by freezing.
It's not cheap but so worth it now and again.

Popped in here today and saw they still had open cardboard boxes of chicken pieces in their freezers, last time I mentioned that on here I think I was told it must've been a one off as no one else had seen it, but again you could buy unwrapped frozen chicken kiev/drumstick pieces. I certainly wouldn't want to know how many fingers/hands had touched them thankyou!

Also on looking at the meat I noticed Bulgarian sausages (?????!) and also the steaks weren't priced up, there are prices per kg on a piece of paper stuck to the freezer but the meat seems to be in unlabelled packaging with no description or price!

They were very busy so must be doing something right!

Chicken has to be cooked at a temperature far higher than any bugs that live on your hands can cope with, whatever you've been doing with them! Likewise the Freezer is old enough to kill anything that might otherwise cause a problem...
It might not look right to anyone used to the UK's vacuum packed sterility, but it's perfectly safe!

I am actually a chef so understand about microbes in food etc etc, and so am extremely hot on hygiene, those 'freezers' are wide open and I doubt kept at the correct constant temperature!

Anyway, at least we won't be arguing over the last lump of 'frozen' chicken, I'd be more concerned about the ingredients in the Bulgarian sausages!
