Whole house wireless

Postby Orlando » 12 Jul 2012 12:34

I have used Holitec services for many years and recently needed a new router so I got one of Digbys the TP Link. I have found it great much better than my previous D Link. Although I can get a signal upstairs it is weak and frequently drops. I received today 2 TP Link devises from Amazon, one connects to the mains and the router the second to the mains upstairs just like normal home plugs. However the one upstairs is wireless! No need to connect using the Ethernet. I may be the last to know about the wireless aspects of these plugs but it is fantastic, easy to install and configure. Total cost £66 inc delivery from Amazon.

They are also known as Homeplugs. I bought a couple some years ago when in Thailand and they did work around my apartment but occasionally stopped talking to each other and I had to unplug them and reconnect to get them 'speaking' again.

I thought it was just the dirty mains there but I brought them here and they did the same - but as I said they were an early model of these and maybe they have improved. Also I found that although they were fine for Intenet use, when I used them to transfer files between my two computers, the transfer rate was quite slow, no better than via the wi-fi.

It is also important to check that the two sockets you intend to send the data between are both on the same mains phase, which is not always the case between upstairs and downstairs in some houses here, else they won't work.

I have now run ethernet cable round my house including through the conduit to upstairs and found this the ideal solution. But it does require work and a helpful friend with a crimping tool (for the connectors).

My advice is if you can borrow a pair of homeplugs from someone, try them out in your house before buying - if happy, go ahead, it is a relatively simple solution.

Another is a wi-fi booster which I have not personally used, so cannot comment on.
