Cat with Skin Problem

Postby Firefly » 16 Jul 2016 12:52

Now my old Cypriot cat has another health problem. The day before yesterday I was brushing him when I found his fur coming out in clumps, the skin was flaky, and the resulting patch was circular. I then found another patch, and went that day to the vet with him, fearing mange. The vet doesn't think that it's mange, and has given me a steroid ointment to apply. He was tested a few weeks ago for ring worm, as he was scratching around the eye socket, which proved negative. He now has two more patches the same, again flaky skin. Our vet says that new fur is already growing where it has come out.

Please does anyone have any idea what this condition is, as I another cat, and don't want her to be affected.

Thanks, Jackie

Surely the vet knows what it is and should advise accordingly?

One of our dogs has a skin problem just now and Yiannis Kyriacou opp Chlorakas Paps is treating her and he's a really super vet. It may be worth you asking his opinion!

Pickles, unfortunately Jackie hasn't got on her profile where she is situated.
However even though she mentions an old Cypriot cat, she is in the UK so would not be able to visit local vet here

Pickles thank you for your reply, Trevor is right, I have relocated to the UK with cat. The vet didn't actually give a diagnosis, but as she's qualified, I expect she has prescribed medication as she sees fit, but still it looks horrid poor cat.

OK but any chance you can add your location to your profile to save people giving pointess info in future?

Thanks

Pickles, thanks again, but I was asking about the condition that my cat has, and if anyone else had experience of similar problems. I had a vet in Cyprus that I was quite happy with.

Our pooch Coco has always had blood problems constant itching, licking, and flapping her ears you cannot see anything on her body, no vet so far has managed a cure this and no doubt they never will either, none of them, I now give half a tablet of anti-histamines (humans type) they do help, but every time I use our vet it is several jabs but it cures nothing, the cost of course is ongoing, the problem I guess will persist for what is left of her life.

Jackie did this happen by any chance after having one of the liquid vials of flea and tick treatment by any chance?

The reason I ask is something similar has happened on different occasions with one of our dogs. The skin fur came away after 2 weeks or so after the treatment. The skin was dry and flaky as you describe with your cat.

The fur grew back without any treatment and the didn't show any signs of being bothered by it.

Thanks for your replies.

Jules, yes it could well be, he is done every month with Advantage. His fur is growing back now and the problem seems to be resolving, fingers and paws crossed. I did wonder if it was anything to do with his diet of fresh fish, he eats that mainly, with biscuits.

Jim, I'm sorry that Coco has this problem, it must be stressful for her poor thing, as you say, she may have to just put up with it.

Let's hope Pepper is over the worst of it now.
