Newly Tax Resident question

Postby O2BinTala » 18 Jan 2016 06:24

If you become tax resident in Cyprus part-way through a year (and who comes on 1 Jan?) do you have to pay Cyprus tax, special contributions etc on the part of your income received during that part year or your income for the whole of the year in which you become resident?

Thanks,

We did. When we registered the office lady calculated our tax from our registration date, ie when we were in her office, completed the forms for us and pointed us to the downstairs counter where we paid the sum of C£25 for the remainder of that years tax. Old info I know but you could always go to the tax office and ask them direct. Paphos reception will probably point you to the lady on the first floor. She is extremely helpful.

If you have moved from the UK you may be able to claim 'split-year' treatment. (see http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/rdrmmanual/rdrm10420.htm)

In terms of tax liability here in Cyprus, you become liable to Cyprus income tax on your worldwide income if you are resident here for 183 days or more, so if you arrive after 2nd July you will (in theory) not become tax resident until the following year.

But if you arrive before 2 July do you only have to declare to Cyprus authorities income received after that point (that you arrived, not 2 July)?

According to advice we have received, if you arrive in the Republic of Cyprus to become permanent resident prior to 2nd July you are deemed to have immediately become resident for tax purposes. You should declare your worldwide income on your Cyprus tax return, along with any foreign tax paid prior to your arrival. The tax office will calculate your tax liability, giving you credit for tax paid abroad.

It doesn't matter when exactly you arrived in Cyprus. It matters whether or not you spend at least 183 days in Cyprus (day of departure doesn't count, day of arrival does). If you do you will be a tax resident. Probably a non-domiciled tax resident, a status which comes with huge tax benefits. You might want to google for details.
