Palm tree..

Postby Jim » 24 Sep 2011 14:15

Probably some of you will have seen this before, but it is the first time our Palm tree has flowered, bit of a monster as it looks like a brain, now it is shooting up further branches, weird plant! our gardener said leave it as cutting the brain out may cause damage, happy when it's flowering days are over..

Hi Jim
We have had 2 fan palms in our garden for years now, but I am not sure of the proper name. Each year for the past 6 years they have been flowering, every time getting more. They grow all around the top of the trunk just below the branches of both trees now. We wait until they are quite large and then cut them off leaving a short stem, they have never caused the trees any problems. The trunks are the hairy type and where Pete cuts the lower branches back every year he leaves this short stem there too showing through the hair on the trunk, it is very effective so cutting the flowers back the same, just adds the same effect.
