Just wondering?

Postby Drambuie » 14 Aug 2015 13:17

I needed to lower the ph of my pool which due to a lack of use and attention was suffering a build up of calcium on the liner.

This I did over a period of non use and the liner is now clean again. The ph is around 6.8 which I think will come up when I use the 5 in 1 tablets.

Problem is that despite a few doses of 5 in 1 tablets and separate Chlorine doses the chlorine is not registering.

So currently crystal clear water and low ph. Plenty of chlorine applied over the period. My question is that as the pool water has been crystal clear for a month or so is it safe to swim in?

You have to raise the PH first. A low PH will cause the chlorine to burn off far to quickly.

Yes true, I was hoping the 5 in 1 tablets would do but seems not. I am quite surprised that the pool has stayed sparkling clear

I am thinking as the CYA was quite high last I checked it's probably best to use Cal Hypo Granules as I believe that increases the PH quite considerable but not CYA. ??

I hardly ever use the pool so just a pain for me but have kids coming over in a few weeks.

Hi
Would recommend that you check your Cyanuric acid levels first should not be above 50ppm, also have you done a dilution test to make sure that you don't have to much Chlorine in your water 50% cold boiled water 50% pool water then test. Some times you should shock with Calcium Chlorine. Ph 7.2 Alk 120 to 180 Chlorine 2.5 ppm Cy 40 to 50 Hope this helps.

Hi Steve

Appreciate your assistance with this.

I have lowered the pool water level considerable and topped up thinking that the new water would raise the pH. I only topped up approx 1/3 rd of what is required so if this has a desired effect I can continue.

When I took a reading this morning using the coloured liquid agents the pH is a light yellow which seems to be 7.2 pH.

I have just done the dilute test as you recommended and both pure pool water and 50/50 return a clear reading (no chlorine)

I had the water checked a few weeks ago and the CYA was very high.

So I am now thinking to leave the pH alone as fresh water will increase it and might end up too high anyway.

How best to lower CYA and increase chlorine?

Hi Drambuie.
I am afraid the only way to lower your Cyan uric Acid is to dump some water if over a 100 ppm half your water. But I don't know how high your level is. If you buy Aqua Test Strips with yellow top these are very good and will do all readings in one dip. If your Cyanuric levels are very high you will not get correct readings. When using Stabilized Chlorine less expensive brands contain lots of Cyanuric acid levels this is a make up of Stabilized Chlorine product. Once your levels are at say 50ppm either Back wash more or use Hypochlorite shock instead, but always dilute before adding to pool water. Hope this helps.

Thanks Stephen.

I lowered my water considerable (below the inlets) in order to work with less water and sort out the original problem of calcium scale.

Therefore I had a lot of fresh water to add in order to get back to normal levels.

I have added most of this back now although can add more if required.

I shall do as you suggest and get the strips and see where I am now more exactly.

Thanks for your help.
