Blood needed

Postby AFJ » 21 Aug 2014 07:17

Had a call Monday morning from The General Hospital asking if I could go and give blood, I did. They are desperate the bank is empty.
So if you're able please go and donate, all groups required.

It's a while since I donated blood. Is there an age limit?

I should be over Early September and will get in touch with the hospital. Presume you need an appointment , or is it a "walk in" system ?
( in the UK I give Platelets on a regular basis )

Cactus lil, I volunteered a few weeks ago. I was told I was too old, even though I am healthy and take no medication. it doesn't make sense. there is a post on this in the Health section.

The post in the Health section suggests blood can be donated up to 66th birthday. I don't know if this is still correct.

You are correct about the age limit in cy, in the UK it used to be 65 some years ago, now they sensibly continue to take donations up to any age 70 and above, if the person is fit and able to give. I donated many times in cy and tried to ask them to reconsider the upper age limit, as there are so many fit older people around, many ex pats included.
They are very short- sighted by using a number/age as a stop date. Maybe the shortage will make them reconsider.
Donations can be made every 4 months for women and 3 for men.
Pafos general has a walk in donation room near where blood tests are done.
Life is too short for bad wine it is said, but in hard times plonk is better than nothing.

You are so right Anais. There are many unfit 50 year olds around. Age is just a number.

With the General just turn up before 9.30 and they have the most comfortable beds of anywhere I have donated and I've given blood since I was 18.

Liz 9.30 is for blood tests, any time up to 1.30 I think.
Topcat afraid you won't be able to donate you have to be on the island for something like 4 months.

Just to correct the time for blood TESTS. You have to register By 9-00am. Although the tests are then taken until all those registered have been tested.

So you need to be registered at the general before you can donate and by that I mean registered as living here too? so holiday makers or those her on limited time cannot donate? I assume they do the thumb prick test beforehand too?

you don't need to be registered to give blood ........ yes you need to be registered if you are going up for your own blood test for the doctor you are going to attend. I have given blood on numerous occassions but now I am a card holder but not got a hospital number.
