Seems like permanganate of potash has been added to the water - maybe as a joke or someone with a grudge!

If you have a purple staining it is normally due to high cyanuric acid (stabilizer). Take a sample of water in to your local pool shop and ask them to test it. The ONLY solution if the cyanuric acid is high is to drain some water off and refill with fresh then use a non stabilized chlorine such as Calcium Hypochlorite, you can buy this in most decent pool shops. Hope this helps

To add to this info, what is happening is the cyanuric acid produced by the stabiliser is building up over the years. Unlike chlorine, for instance, it does not evaporate and so reaches a point of saturation. When it becomes apparent, is now, i.e., when we get cold snap. The water has reached a temperature whereby the cyanuric acid starts to come out of solution in the form of a purple powder, and you get the typical purple stain around the water line.

The advice regarding refreshing (diluting) the water is spot on, there's no alternative, but before you do, vac the residue out to waste and clean the waterline with a microfibre cloth, otherwise the stain will become more difficult to remove the longer it is left on.

You will need to drain a fair bit of water out to make a difference. I would suggest the more the better, around 25 - 30%. This will take the water to well below the skimmer inlets, so close both skimmer valves and fully open the drain valve before you proceed. Once done, refill the pool and don't reopen the skimmer valves until the water is high enough.

You may have a 20 or 30 Euro hike on your next water bill, but it's cheaper than a new liner.

Hi Pavios.
Many reasons why your liner has gone pink. First you must tell me your pool water levels. Ph Alk Clorine and Cy Acid level as I don't now what it is. But some reasons that liners can have looks like staining. This can be caused by none compatible substances can migrate through the membrane either metal in your water, Or Algae coming from behind your liner. Although it looks bad it dose not damage your liner. We have experienced colours black grey and pink. But. First I must now your chemical readings.
