To add to this info, what is happening is the cyanuric acid produced by the stabiliser is building up over the years. Unlike chlorine, for instance, it does not evaporate and so reaches a point of saturation. When it becomes apparent, is now, i.e., when we get cold snap. The water has reached a temperature whereby the cyanuric acid starts to come out of solution in the form of a purple powder, and you get the typical purple stain around the water line.
The advice regarding refreshing (diluting) the water is spot on, there's no alternative, but before you do, vac the residue out to waste and clean the waterline with a microfibre cloth, otherwise the stain will become more difficult to remove the longer it is left on.
You will need to drain a fair bit of water out to make a difference. I would suggest the more the better, around 25 - 30%. This will take the water to well below the skimmer inlets, so close both skimmer valves and fully open the drain valve before you proceed. Once done, refill the pool and don't reopen the skimmer valves until the water is high enough.
You may have a 20 or 30 Euro hike on your next water bill, but it's cheaper than a new liner.
