Quite a lot of pools in Australia look green because the liners/tiles are green. This may be the case in Brazil too. Not sure really as I haven't watched the Olympics.

Certainly not down to the colour of the tiles / liner as it was blue the day before when the guys were diving. None of the girls seem to be objecting to diving in to it but it looked pretty bad! British girls tried really hard, great diving but not good enough. Seems no one has come up with an explanation as to why it turned green ...... yet.

I think the water turns green when someone who has been using doping is using it maybe?
Who was in last? A Russian?

Pools go green when they have algae in them. It was reported on the News earlier that this pool has an algae bloom in it. Can be easily rectified by a competent pool cleaner.

Olympic Pools closed finally this Friday as the water stings and smells now....

It burns! It burns! Treated Rio water stings water polo players"

"“I could barely open my eyes for the final quarter,” said Tony Azevedo, the U.S. men’s water polo team captain after Team USA’s victory over France on Wednesday. “This is the Olympic Games and they are putting so much chlorine in the water that people can’t see. You can’t have that.”

Erica Andresen, the associate director for recreation facilities at George Mason University, told the Washington Post that she has never seen anything like what’s happened in Rio, suggesting that officials probably “shocked the pool,” using large amounts of chlorine in an attempt to restore the pools to their normal shades.

In the end, Azevedo said that the problem has now grown from a minor aesthetic disturbance to an actual health hazard.

Finally they had to empty the water and replaced it with fresh one
to start from the beginning with the treatment of the water, it looks OK now.
I had a similar problem with my pool many years ago and in the end I was advised
by experts to replace the water or empty at least the half of it. Well, that was the
solution for ME but I was not going to mention it before at this forum as I am not an pool expert.
