I used my id at the Transport department yesterday to 1) re register my Nissan as I had lost my old document and then register a new car all within the same day.... If you ask questions you might not like the answer... i don't have a yellow slip just an old brown alien card but couldn't tell you wear it is haven't used it since i got 6 years ago.... all the Cypriots I have dealt with say it's better than a passport. We all know that Cyprus wants everything in triplicate or more and they have spats about anything and everything ... it's how the Mediterranean works... it's part of the package..... great ain't it.

In case this is of any help I am showing below an email I received from a contact at the House of Commons giving the latest response from the Foreign Office. I have also put it on the thread "It seems we are illegal immigrants now"

I have just been given this update by the FCO.

The Republic of Cyprus has confirmed that they will no longer issue new ID cards to non Cypriot nationals. We are urgently seeking [u]written clarification[u on residency rules but in the meantime, if you hold an old brown alien card or a yellow slip without expiry date you need not take any action. If you do not have any registration documents or have an out of date yellow slip you need to go to the nearest Immigration Office to register if you intend to stay in Cyprus permanently. We do, however, advise British nationals to consider carrying a form of identification and their registration or residency papers with them. In addition, we also remind you that ID cards are not valid for travel by British nationals. All those who wish to travel outside of the Republic of Cyprus should do so on their passport.

They will send me more information as soon as they have it.

Just made my appointment at the immigration today. First available date 20th June!

In the list of documents you must bring with you, it mentions 'Bank statement from local and your country signed and stamped up to showing movements of the account for the last 3 months'. Has anybody done this?

If anybody is going to the immigration to make an appointment, make sure you take your passport(s). It seems you won't get one without showing it(them) first.

As an aside, my wife and I both have a permanent Immigration Permit (since 2000) and (brown) Alien Passports. According to the statement yesterday from the British High Commission (in post on CL regarding residency), we need not register again. A number of people are still concerned that the matter is still not clear, me being one of them. Consequently, I shall keep my appointment with the immigration.

I have an appointment on 2 May and as I have a bank account in the UK which my pension is paid into and also use for transferring funds between UK and Cyprus I have been told that I can download the last three months of the UK bank statement and print it off.

With regards to the local (Cyprus) bank just go into your bank a day or two before your appointment and ask them for the Statement for Immigration purposes. There may be a charge.

A sensible idea to keep the appointment with Immigration - MOH needs a Yellow Slip to change his UK driving licence to a Cypriot licence when he turns 70 later this year.

I understand ID cards for non Cypriots are no longer valid anyway. If you have a Yellow Slip or Alien Card with no expiry date that is acceptable.

Jim, i believe you are correct about the ID cards not being valid now.

But, they are still accepted as proof of ID, I assume because most people do not know the rules have changed.

Your right; Trev many aren't aware they are no longer valid. I still show mine because pronunciation and spelling of my surname to many is entirely different so it's easier just to show the ID card and they copy my name from it either in English or Greek.

We had our appointment at Immigration this morning. We were asked to be there between 8.30 and 9.00am. We were called inside at 8.45am and were outside again at 9.10 having a nice coffee at the Cafe Central on the corner with the new Yellow slips already in our possesion.

No problems whatsoever and very friendly staff.

We were holders of an Immigration Permit with a stamp in our passports (without expiry date) since 1994. They kept that permit and issued the new Yellow slips in stead. Piece of cake.

Thanks Amber and Louise. Much clearer now what I need to do. So much for the Immigration Permit being valid for life!

Our appointment was for 9.00 today (numbers 29&30 in the queue). We arrived at ten to nine and were back on the street with our "permanent" yellow slips by half past. Staff were delightful, no complaints whatsoever.

HOWEVER... there were a number of people there who had permanent residence stamps in their passports and who had been advised that they needed a new yellow slip. They were being sent away with the advice that their permanent residence stamp was sufficient. As they had made the effort to come equipped with reams of photocopied documents (and certified bank statements) none of them were particularly happy.

I can only advise that if you have a permanent residence stamp in your passport you should ring the immigration department and ask for confirmation. The lady who attended to us said they had been on the phone to NIcosia to confirm that their information was correct.

Thank you for posting this Foundwinds. This is what many of us have been trying to tell people since that very silly newspaper article which had it all wrong, but they just wouldn't listen.
