Dog Poisonings - new type of Poison

Postby kili1 » 15 Mar 2013 19:12

I've just been emailed by a friend in the Limassol area about some shocking cases of dog poisoning which have occurred a few days ago in Laneia and Finikaria. In these cases a new type of poison, possibly Cyanide was laid, mixed with a lard like substance, like chicken fat and was smeared on a rock. A resident was out walking with her 3 dogs in the hills above Lania. Two dogs had a lick at the substance, rolled over on their backs and were dead in 10 minutes. Something similar has also happened shortly before this in Finikaria where more dogs were poisoned in the same awful manner. People in both villages are really concerned in case a child should touch this poisoned mixture. The substance is being analysed and the police will keep it afterwards for 2 months in case they can find the poisoners. So it said.

OK, this happened in LImassol, not Paphos, but my point in posting this is just to warn dog owners to be alert in case any copy cat poisoner should lay bait in our area.

It's been going on for months and as far as Pyrgos & Pareklesia districts.
It's been all over facebooks on the Skippy Kit page and many of the dog rescue pages too.
Finally, they put it in the newspaper a couple of days ago and apparently, it's now going to be investigated.

They call it "candlewax" poison because it looks like a melted candle at first view and is very fast acting. A large dog may have a fighting chance (I know of one that has survived) but for small dogs, it's too strong for them to survive.

The only way something will eventually be done to people who put down poison will be the day that a child does put their fingers in something they shouldn't.

After over 9 years of reading about it and being so frustrate that nobody is doing anything about it, I'm starting to think that may be a good thing!!!

Totally wrong, I know - but so is intentionally poisoning people's pets. The candlewax poison has been deliberately laid on the trails where they know people walk their dogs.

On Wednesday our friends in Pissouri took their two dogs for a walk and one was poisoned - had to drive to Paphos and was seen by clinic staff at D&N Vets. Treated with at least 5 injections and a period of time several hours after the incident when the vet said it was touch and go whether the dog would survive.

The dog has recovered, but was a bit wobbly the next day. It took 36 hours until he had fully recovered. They enjoy going on long walks with other people and dogs every week. We have advised them to get a muzzle for each dog.

Having worked with Cyanide most of my working life I am amazed any dog or human would survive it, these evil bastards should be sorted out and punished severely, already a child has been poisoned some years back, it could easily happen again, not sure why the Cypriot authorities do not at least make some effort to get this stopped if one of their pets or god forbid a child is poisoned then just maybe they would take some real action.

Cyanide must be a restricted chemical here on the island, no idea how anyone could get hold of this, just imagine the poison getting into any water supply, it really could be lethal for anyone, you normally only have seconds to get your stomach flushed with a rather nasty solution that makes anyone taking it violently sick, and I mean violently.

Come on Cyprus this is really hurting your economy, it surly puts many off from moving out here AS IT SHOULD!!

I'm intrigued to know why anyone would do this? For what purpose?

Because they are sick, evil bar stewards that don't like animals.

There's quite a large thread on Argos Animal Sanctuary facebook page with comments of what has happened and where the poison has been laid, also with a .pdf with details of the Cyanide Paste that's used to make up this poison.

Below is an image of the poison:

The link says it "deteriorates and de- toxifies in humid and wet conditions" and that it "doesn't contaminate water".

A pretty lethal poison tor use in Cyprus!

I expect another reason poison gets laid, apart from the stray dogs and hunters theory is that hardly anyone clears up after their dog. If people continually walk their dogs on a farmer's land and not clear up after them. the easiest way to stop them is to kill a few!

As much as I love my dogs, I NEVER walk them off the lead - I'm lucky to have a large garden they can knacker themselves out in!

Oh yes they do Annie please do not cite this as the reason for this awful act, it is disgraceful no matter what..stray's do not though pick up the mess, but our innocent pest do get poisoned!!! I have to say I really get angry when people say this.
Taking your dog mess away with you is as expected, I even pick up stray dog mess on my walk!! but doing this will never stop these moron dog and cat killers I'm afraid, it is down to the local authorities to get some form of punishment, I'm fairly sure they know at least some of these killers.

Cyanide is a more than lethal killer, and not just for animals!!! do not lose sight of this.

Hunters also lay poison to deter other hunters from encroaching on their "patch".... What a stupid mentality this island has sometimes. 8-|

I think it's fairly well known that it is mostly UK expats that walk their dogs - so maybe this is more of a 'not liking Brits' attitude rather than 'not liking animals'!

Not necessarily AR, last hunting season there were many poisonings on the Akamas in remote areas not frequented by Brit dog walkers, but seen as has been said, more of a warning to other hunters!

AR.

Well Cypriots dogs & cats also die from this or possibly Cypriot kids, it is indiscriminate illegal act with what must be an illegal substance..

I agree with both the last 2 posts, and maybe you will recall I have always expressed my horror and disgust at these evil bastards, but as so many of the poisonings seem to happen on known dog walking areas (as well as non 'hunting' areas) I think my point is still valid, not exlusively so, but valid.

Jim, I'm not trying to justify this heinous act, however people don't always clear after their dogs and I expect over time it does p*ss people off. This could just be another reason for this barbaric behaviour.

Scattie Annie, You have a valid point, not all dog walkers, irrespective of nationality , pick up after their dogs unfortunately. Perhaps they don't follow C.L.? Even people who should know better. I have seen dog mess along most trails where dogs are walked. Including sometimes near beaches.
