taking a dog to UK

Postby lizziemacceramics » 29 Aug 2016 12:01

Can someone please let me know how to take my little rescue dog back to the UK with us early next Year. We want to try and book this ourselves as it will cost less, He is micro-chipped and has all in vaccinations to date with his pet passport. I have looked on Thomas Cook and Thomsons but can't find out where to book a pet on. Help!!
thank you in advance

Best to ring the airlines direct to be honest.

Liz,
If you don't feel like doing it all yourself, I can highly recommend the lady who arranged all the details for our 2 dogs when we brought them home to UK three months ago.

Ours flew from Larnaca airport and travelled the day after we arrived in UK. We had to travel by train from the airport to our new home the next day so in the end, we all arrived at the house on the same day albeit a few hours apart.

We got our own pet passports done by our local vet and that was our biggest trauma. Just make sure that the vet you use is familiar with the new passport system that came in almost 2yrs ago. Ours was not - and we had several issues....

We kennelled our dogs for 2 nights with Cyprus Dog Rescue (based at Xylofagou in the east of the island). We hired 2 travel crates (free of charge), we just paid from them to be returned back to Cyprus (50 GBP and 40 GBP) and the cost of flights for 2 dogs (one of 40kg and the other a little under 20kg) in a Giant crate and a Large crate was 785 GBP. We paid an additional 85 GBP for an animal courier to collect them on our behalf at Manchester airport and transfer them the 60 odd miles to their new home on the Fylde coast. She brought them to us a little after 10pm in the evening after collecting them at around 8.30pm.

Cyprus Dog Rescue did all the paperwork and arranged transport for our dogs from their rescue centre kennels to Larnaca airport. We were kept updated all the way and were extremely happy with the service.

Since then, I've signed up with EasyFundRaising and each time I shop online in UK my purchase raise a donation for the dog rescue charity.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions....

These are our 2 dogs - the tan one is our old boy (Indie) and the other 99% Rottweiler is our Ruby. On a walk yesterday in the lane at the edge of the golf course:

The only airlines you can book directly with are Aegean and BA, both from Larnaca and both only to Heathrow.

Other airlines - Monarch, Thomas Cook and Thomson can only be booked via their designated handling agents. You can book with any pet agent, but they then have to go via these designated agents.

If I can help, please PM me.

Aegean are cheaper for small pets, but if the crate is say 80cm long, then they are not and it is cheaper to use a charter airline to transport them. It also depends on where in the UK your final destination is.
