Having another bad bout of this very painful condition, some fairly large stones passing through my system, anyone here had an similar problem and how do you deal with the real pain of these stones..

Go to the general hospital and get a Buscopan injection.

As a painkiller you need something which relaxes smooth muscle.

Pethidine usually works well.

if you know for sure that the pain is stones, why aren't you being offered to have them blasted which reduces their size considerably. At least that is what they offer in the UK.

Better still an up to date urology scan to show how many and size there are.

Jen I have had this before, you can feel them when you urinate and can see them in the pan! no mistaking Renal Stones, I think without doubt the most painful thing I have ever had, that included a total hip replacement, broken left leg, and chopping the top off one of my fingers, this is all those in one painful trip to go for a pee..awful!

GP at the General never offered laser treatment only to drink as much water as possible, laser blasting as you call it is only used when you cannot urinate because of them, so he said..

By the way the last time I paid to have a Ultrasound on my bladder area, his diagnosis was Kidney Stones, go home and drink Litres of water, it came through in the night and you could hear me scream two streets down.

I have recently paid to have the scans here in the UK, 510.00 for scan, 180.00 to initially see the consultant and 90.00 for the results. My GP thought the pain I was having was due to stones, as it turned out no stones thank goodness.

I can remember my father passing one once and he was in absolute agony on all fours, hence he had the blasting to reduce them.

Are you sure it's kidney stones and not gall stones?

They most certainly are Renal stones, if you read my post you will see I have had them before and had an ultrasound examination at the Iasis hospital (six month wait for this at the General) and it was confirmed that indeed they were kidney stones, as I also said they passed though a few hours after my ultrasound, and yes taking one of the stones to be looked at they also confirmed that they were calcium renal stones.

I do not recommend them either, just thought some may have info on these.I have looked on the Net..

Jen, what your father went through I can understand, I was like a dying fly on the bathroom floor, until it passed through, it was the size of your little fingernail, felt more like a meteorite. This weeks were smaller but painful all the same.

I only asked. Just because it was kidney stones before doesn't necessarily mean it will always be kidney stones. Did the doctor give/prescribe any antibiotics as the stones can damage the duct walls on their way out and an infection could follow?

Well I pee'd out another large stone last week DID YOU HEAR ME SCREAM?, same as before but not so huge, at least it felt huge, no I have not visited GP on this occasion, the last time I was not offered any medication (General) they said unfortunately I get Kidney stones just as millions also get them, no cure as such only if you cannot urinate, then the blaster comes out, or in should I say, there is no mistaking renal stones for Gall stones,

My sympathies for you. I got one in 2011 but I did not know what it was. The pain was incredible. My wife managed to drag me to the Iasis where they gave me Pethadine and a scan. I was kept in for 3 days until it passed but because I was on Pethadine I didn't feel a thing. Luckily it has not happened again.

Don't they do lithotripsy in Cyprus?

The pain is so excruciating that I doubt anything outside of morphine (or similar would help)

Around 40 years ago ,in my late twenties ,I had the desire to constantly urinate. But when I went to the bathroom nothing or very little happened. Naturally, as a man, I did nothing about it. Some 6 weeks later I had the pain as above. So bad I nearly passed out. My wife called the Doctor who gave me an injection but said and did nothing else. The urge to constantly urinate persisted and after another 4 weeks or so I was struck again with this agonising pain. This time a different Doctor came. He gave me an injection and told me that I had kidney stones. This was in the uk, by the way. He told me to drink lots of water. I took this advice seriously and always had water by my side which I drank constantly. I did this to the point of let being unpleasant. I cannot remember how long it took (but no more than a couple of months) but the stone passed without pain.
I read somewhere that a combination of magnesium and vitamin b6 reduced the risk of stones forming again. So for years I took a supplement called magnesium OK. This was a supplement designed for women but since it had the right ingredients it's what I used. I still take 500mg of magnesium and a vitamin b supplement daily. The stones have never re-occurred. Of course it's possible that they may not have re-occurred without the supplements, but I think they helped.
These days the advice with regard to magnesium and vitamin b6 still stands.But nowadays you can now do other things as well. Have a look at six steps to preventing kidney stones by dr David williams.
It won't do any harm.

It's 10mg of vitamin b6 and not 100mg as shown on dr williams page.

Just going through all of this again, Renal Stones, I would not wish this pain on anyone, not so large as it stopped my urine but big enough to slow the flow significantly, followed by blood and many smaller stones also very sore kidneys too, I wish there was help but all the doctors I have seen said drink lots of water, not sure if this helps but I drink several Ltr's a day, as you say it becomes very unpleasant to drink so much.

Before someone mentions ultrasonic stone dispersal, they only do this for blocked unitary tract.

I posted the piece about kidney stones in the hope that it would help you. Especially the the use of magnesium and vitamin b6 as a preventative.
You seem very well informed and know ,I suspect, about diet and the foods to eat and those to avoid.

If I were in your position I would continue to drink lots of water (but knowing too much water can be dangerous-catch22 )and take magnesium and b6. I would also try to get a prescription for the absolutely agonising pain. Preferably something morphine based. I would do these things simply because I would want to do something.

But really I can't offer you any real or helpful advice but do hope that things take a turn for the better soon.

I´m feeling for you. I´ve had kidney stones 4 times already. However, I don´t see why they wouldn´t crush them by ultrasound. They did it for me when I asked them to. That wasn´t in Cyprus though. Would they be equally hesitant at a private hospital?

I had kidney stones in the UK some years ago, and the hospital would not use ultrasound for anyone of a "sturdy" build as it was far less successful. This may have changed but I could understand the reasoning. Whatever you and they decide, I wish you luck. I have never, ever, experienced such pain in my life as kidney stones. If the comparison nurses use is true (that it is similar to childbirth) then I cannot understand how the human race continues.
