Rheumatology and the Gen Hospital

Postby musicman » 23 Mar 2014 15:06

Hi everyone,

This is really a question about procedures, you see I am 99% certain that I have developed PMR, and although I am reluctant to go down the corticosteroid route, there does not seem to be another option and the condition is fast crippling me. So, I have a full medical card because I pay NI here but I have had little use of the Hospital and still have my prescription book with no pages used. However, I believe that there is no Rheumatologist at the Pafos General, and these are the only qualified doctors who could properly diagnose and put me on predisnone (corticosreroids). So my question really is about me going to see a Rheumatologist privately - which looks inevitable - but then what happens if I get a prescription? Can I still take it to the hospital pharmacy even though it wouldn't have come from a doctor there, because this treatment lasts 2 - 6 years apparently and I am sure the meds will not be cheap if I had to buy them. Thanks

Hi Musicman, yes go to see Angelici Drey, she is a Private Rhuematologist based near Alpha Mega and you then take her presciptions to the General as normal. I can PM you her details if you would like. I see her, she is lovely lady and very good.

Pops... your post amazed me. I thought that if you had a prescription from a private doctor that it would not be accepted at the General Pharmacy.
It is just on the doctors pad and not in a Patients prescription book.
Do you not need 'labels' to get things from the pharmacy, and do you have to stick to 50c stamps on the prescription' ???

I have a friend who was referred to Dr Drey by the General Hospital and was given a prescription which I believe was dispensed at the General.

I have had it explained to me now. The General does not have a Rheumatologist on their staff, and so someone with that complaint HAS to see a particular outside doctor.
Because this is through no fault of the patient the general accept the prescriptions from this doctor, but the stamps have to be used just the same.

Yes please POPS I would be grateful for Dr Drey's details -thankyou.
And could you please also clarify whether I have to see a GP at the general first, or just go straight to the private Rheumatologist. Thanks for your good wishes Pickles, I feel like I am living a nightmare at the moment every day is worse than the last.
