Which One?

Postby coggle123 » 16 Jul 2016 12:50

Morning Everyone,

We have decided to buy a Mag box for our apt. On our next visit, the problem is, like a previous post from D&P, we are both
technically challenged  , reading about them has made my head spin, it might as well be in Greek :-\ , so could someone please advise this pair of ' dummies ' which box too buy.....250, 254 or 260 :-\ :-\ :-\

We would be very grateful for your help :)

Most people are going to be drawn to the one they have bought themselves. I have the Mag 254 which I find is great for us.
When you arrive here why not pop into Computer SOS where they will explain the differences and suggest which is best for you.

Thank you for the advice trevnhil, we'll do that, ( though I probably won't understand a word of it! ).

I can't recall anyone on this site giving a review of the 260. I have both 250 and 254, and I would be hard pressed to say that the 254 is better than the 250.

If I were you, I would closely at the price. As the 254 is supposedly the replacement for the 250, you might find the 250 heavily discounted.

Thank you Keving, as long as whichever box provides us with UK channels, News, Sport & Films, we'd be happy, it doesn't
have to be an all singing & dancing format, as it probably would be wasted on us because of the reasons I mentioned
earlier

Just in case you don't realise, you do need reasonably good broadband to plug the box into.

I believe they run all right on 4 mb. But in times of great demand (World Cup. Olympics, or similar) you could have intermittent problems, because of lack of bandwidth.
But 99% f the time ours runs just fine.
Also if you are not here full time it may be worth asking on here for a program supplier that turns it off when you are away or at least one where you can pay monthly

Morning Party-Jane.Cy & Trev,

Thank you both, we had been told that we would need a broadband connection for the box to work, & were actually originally just going to get a broadband connection for our IPad but decided to add the box as well.
When people start talking ' techie ' I feel myself ' glazing over, I think that part of my brain switches itself off & goes too sleep

Brian from Computer SOS will be installing it, so I've no doubt he'll sort out the correct migabites scmigabite
Thingamybites :-\ for us

That's great Party-Jane.Cy,
It's just comforting to know that it'll be installed by someone reliable :), by the way, the other half of this pair of
' dummies ' just suggested that we might need a landline, my thoughts are that we don't....., so which of us is the
Dumbest..... :-\ .....

You are certainly going to need a telephone line or wireless signal from some company. Of course that is more expense.

Hi Trev,

So we just need to purchase a ' signal ', but don't have to have an actual phone, is that right? :-\

You have to have internet coming into your house. This comes in at least two ways. One you need a telephone line for which you have to pay a monthly rental. I don't believe you Have to have a telephone. From the socket on the wall a cable goes to the Modem, and then another to the Mag box.

However there are some places that don't have telephone lines outside their property (we are like this) .
So instead of paying for the renting of a phone line we have a wireless signal sent to an Aerial on the roof. You have to pay for this instead of a phone line.
From the Ariel a cable goes to the Modem and then another to the Mag Box...

In both cases the modem transmits a signal around the building which our laptops use to gain access to the internet..

Thanks for that detailed explanation Trev,

I'm glad we don't have to have a landline, I think that they are pretty obsolete, we barely use the one we have here, I'm sure Brian will sort it all out for us, at least we were both right & still on a level playing field of ' Dumbness '

I have a MTN 3G mobile connection as I do not have a land line and I can not link to any thing other than the mobile network. It works well but occasionally there is a buffering problem probably football related?

Hi Pebblebeach,

We have cable here in the UK, & get the odd hiccup with that, so I can only suppose that there is no ' perfect ' system out there that doesn't get the odd glitch :(

Morning Party-Jane.Cy,

I'm just guessing, but I assume you have to wait a while to get connected to a landline, hence my preference for the other
method, for no other reason than simple impatience/ convenience :)

It is quite possible that your apartment has a phone cable to the property. Phone wires here tend to go in tubes under the ground and then into the properties.
Have you not got a phone socket in your property? If you have, unscrewing the face plate will tell you if you have any wiring in the walls.

So that shows that the apartment has wiring in it for a telephone.... The next thing you need to know is whether it is connected to the wires in the street outside.
The street telephone wires usually are in a tube from the street to the building. Where they enter the building there is usually a quite small inspection door / hatch in the wall.

One other strange thing here is that it is you own electrician who would see to any wiring in the building, not the Telephone company... Their responsibility seems to end at the box in the outside wall.

There is a hatch by the front door of the block, we had our intercom system replaced when we were over there in May, & that was the hatch they used to gain access to the wiring.
We are lucky enough to have an electrician that does all the communal problems, so I'll ask him if we are indeed wired to the telephone system, thanks for the info Trev, every little helps. :)
