Postby Daz n Mandie » 12 Oct 2011 09:31

Just heard on the news that Sony are re-calling 1.6m TV globally due to possible faults where the TV's have started smoking during use.

Funny!!

I gave up on Sony years ago when they started essembling them in Wales I belive, the set I bought then was unreliable, times change though, but if I had the dosh I would go for the 50'' Samsung LED not LCD..and not 3D either :)

What ever happened to Plasma...RIP.

LG make the screens for the majority of TV manufacturers, so you must have got a dodgy one.

Sharon that made me smile..

I posted the same several years ago about LG producing screens for many manufactures, but both my LG's have banding, if you look on the Internet you will find this is a common problem with some makes including some LG models, it is not curable and it is not that obtrusive even in High Definition, Football and cricket pitches it is noticeable, like a vertical shadow, it is a well known problem not my dodgy set ;) indecently I love the LG apart from this small problem.

Next set will be a Samsung though. An LED type, need to save a little harder though, very expensive here at this moment in time.

This banding test on an LG screen is more obvious with this golf program, I find it worst as most do on any green background.

here is a list of the Sony TV's with the potential overheating problem

The models affected are all LCDs, sold in Europe since June 2007.

They are: KDL-40D3400, KDL-40D3500, KDL-40D3550, KDL-40D3660.

KDL-40V3000, KDL-40W3000, KDL-40X3000, KDL-40X3500.

Some 1.6 million of the TVs have been sold worldwide; 630,000 of them in Europe.

Reports of overheating sets have so far all come from Japan.

Well eventually I did buy the Samsung 50" Smart 3D TV , it took many years ( see the date of this thread) in the end we saved enough to buy one, had it several weeks now and every time we use it the picture quality through my IPTV system is truly stunning, well worth the wait.. :)

The few people I know that have bought 'Smart' TV's have not been very impressed with the Smart features.

Why?

1. The Smart features are not very cutting edge.
2. Each manufacturer has their own ideas of what is Smart.
3. Most importantly the internet TV streaming devices they were required to buy to watch internet TV already had all the Smart features they needed and they were better implemented than the dated implementations of most of the leading TV manufacturers. One nice implementation is doing away with a separate remote control for their internet TV devices.

Morning dexter, Your up and at me early today! :D

It came with the package as did 3D, your not forced to use the Smart function and I don't.But it is fun when you have the time to look at the features Smart does offer.

I use a Small Form factor PC on this set up that is far more comprehensive than any Smart function. It has a Wireless keyboard and mouse to navigate very easily. Mine uses Win 8.1 OS, just love it! Had this one for three years..

It is very small

As I said Dexter it came with the TV, I have no use for that function at all!

If I want Internet stuff that small format PC is definitely the answer, my advice is similar to yours do not bother with the Smart features that many TV manufactures offer, if you do wish to use your telly for films and other stuff then a small format PC this I feel is the way to go or IPTV streaming unit, I use the Mag as you know, love that too.

The Lenovo 190 I use also plays blu-rays!! and remember those DVD's :ymdaydream:

I highly recommend this way to do it if you do not wish to have streaming TV, I am fortunately spoilt for choice on this :) .

On paying for these features we may or may not use, when I looked around at the cost of these Samsung 50" TV's in Cyprus they actually cost less than Amazon or most UK outlets, they would not in any case ship out here also you have a local warantee, very happy with the unit cost more than happy in fact.

As you may or may not know I am not a casual TV viewer like some on CL, I use this equipment daily when not helping to run this website, I treat my TV as a pleasure not for occasional use, it is used....a lot!
