Skype customer service has posted a message for customers.

"Some of you may experience problems with Skype presence and may not see online. We have detected an issue with the status settings of Skype.

Affected users will not be able to change their status, their contacts will all show as offline and they will be unable to start Skype calls to them.

Instant messages are still being delivered as usual. The status issue also doesn't affect Skype for Web, which can be used to make calls and send instant messages.

We're working on a fix for this issue and hope to have an update for you soon. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused while we get this resolved.

Please note that you can access Skype via https://web.skype.com.

As I´m leaving for Cyprua next week I bought my mom an Android cellphone and installed Skype on it so that she can call me for free. However, when she tries to contact me via Skype-to-Skype my cell only rings once before ending the call. So I don´t have a chance to answer. Other people can contact me that way though. Does anybody have an explanation for that? Or - even better - know how to fix this?

We gave up on Skype a while ago.

We now all have WhatsApp installed on all our smartphones which is great/'free' for messaging including photos (it uses wi-fi and/or mobile data) and they have just introduced calling as well, which also works well

I've never particularly like Skype and find Facetime on iPads a much better experience.

WhatsApp is a brillant app; so clever and user-friendly. And of course, costs nothing to use.

To answer jeba, I just did a quick Google search outlining this problem. It is clearly a very widespread problem as a lot of people were asking the same question. Sadly I didn't find a single solution.

Might be worth you both uninstalling Skype and then re-installing.

Again most of us may not have or want an Ipad Lloyd, Skype is fine by me, no problems at all..I even use Skype on my mobile :-bd

Remember and obviously your contacts would need to be on the same system.

Being someone who is constantly on the move in different places and different countries, Skype to me is a God-send. Whatsapp is ok but no video calling and as Jim said unless you have Apple phones or tablets it's a non starter using their system. Yes Skype does have certain problems but the benefits outweigh any problems it may have. Messenger is quite good and we use either that or Whatsapp when Skype is being problematic though I've had the same "one ring problem" with both of them as well.

I agree. Apple products are good, but vastly overpriced. Look at the unit sales/profits compared to android devices.

People vote with their wallets. There's a reason why Apple is just about the most successful company on the planet; some reasons here: http://www.computerworld.com/article/2883747/why-apple-is-the-most-successful-company-in-history.html

Though I know some on this forum don't like Macs, never in my lifetime will I go back to a PC and Microsoft software. Though I have to confess that when it comes to a smartphone I use Samsung/Android (mainly for the better camera).

Oh course there is the issue of Apple paying the correct taxes.

As android is more popular than Android in terms of units sold then I take your point about people voting with their wallets.

Steve Jobs even ripped off and cheated his founding partner, a fact well documented.

If you think I am going to buy my personal computer on the basis of who pays what taxes where, you have another think coming.

I guess you use Google? Pray tell me where Google pay taxes ;)

And if you want to find out how Microsoft avoids paying taxes, read this: http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-microsoft-avoids-taxes-loopholes-irs-2013-1

You raised the issue on profits.

Not everyone has the money to (nor wants to) pay inflated prices for technology like you have, especially when there is better value to be be had elsewhere.

I would love to know where these figures come from regarding I Phone or Samsung; all I know is where ever I travel Samsung appears to be the most popular phone and used by nearly everyone I meet. Just bought the wife the Samsung Edge for Christmas and the daughter the new I Phone; for looks the Edge is streets ahead and is much more versatile. Considering the majority of parts in Apple products are made by Samsung I really can't understand your logic Lloyd,

Jim B, you may have missed my earlier post? I said I own a Samsung phone! So does my wife, daughter and son-in-law. I recently bought a new S5. But when it comes to computers I choose an iMac.

Sorry Lloyd, I missed that. I have the Galaxy 5 and it is a very good phone.

When I'm away I use Skype most nights and of course it has its problems but overall it is pretty good. It is banned in many countries due to revenue losses of the state phone companies, it has saved me a fortune in phone bills. We use Whatsapp for short calls during the day or fallback if there are problems with Skype so we get the benefits of all the free systems.

The Samsung S6 Edge is drop-dead gorgeous, but I just couldn't bring myself to pay the asking price, even though 90% of my phone use is business. I always have a silicon cover on my phone in case it gets dropped and without admittedly too much research, jumped to the conclusion that much of the nice appearance of the S6 Edge would be lost with a silicone cover on it. So in the end I went for the S5 which was about 40% of the price and it's still a great phone.

Looks like there's an S7 and S7 Edge on the way now: http://in-cyprus.com/samsung-preliminary-launch-of-galaxy-s7/
