Seeing about a new hip

Postby grace48 » 15 Jun 2010 14:07

I suffer from osteoarthritis, and have already had one hip replaced (private hospital in Limassol). I now want to check out getting the other one done at Pafos Generalas I can't afford to pay for another. Does any one know a good orthopaedic specialist there, and which days of the week he/she is in attendance?

Hi Grace I do not think the General will give that choice, but I am sure you will get the best Orthopedic surgeon that they will offer you..

I would suggest you talk to Firefly on here.

You could try PMing her.

I bet there is not a surgeon on Cyprus or any other country who has not had failures, if your comment was aimed at the General orthopedic surgeon ( I do not know his name) he has moved on, there is now a new top man there, I had mine done at the Iasis (Dr Kritiotis) when I could afford insurance, but if you cannot afford the Atlantic's or other insurers price for private health insurance then you have to go with the local hospital, that is if you qualify for this free service.

I have heard of people having no problem with hip replacement at the general, of course I have heard of some very poor after care treatment, also I have heard of a member who has had no hip at all after the operation going wrong in the UK, life is like that NO guarantees, and Jackie I hope you are on the mend now. You looked well the last time we met!!

Jim, I wholeheartedly agree.
My late father used to have a saying:
"The man who never made a mistake never made b***er all"
However, it is what is done to rectify the errors during the after-care that would be my concern.
I was simply suggesting that a chat with someone who has had a few problems might avoid a recurrence..

Hi there,
I would agree with Jim. I know of people who have had hip replacements in the Paphos General and who report good care and good recovery. A neighbour of mine did this and is now very fit and active. I also know of others who tell a sad tale. But I also hear of people visiting the private hospitals with horror stories to recount afterwards.

I visit the general hospital regularly (unfortunately) and now that I know the system, know the consultant and go prepared I have no complaints at all. My consultant is very knowledgeable and aware and she is doing her very best to help me. The support staff are pleasant, courteous and efficient. What more does anyone want.

I was forced to visit the general hospital as the private ones cannot treat me for my condition so I am grateful for the opportunity to experience the state funded health care and find out for myself.
