Smart on the Polis Road usually has them (Mavrokokkoz/Black Kumin Seeds - Green Field brand in a clear plastic tub with green lid)..it's on the left going uphill from Viofos lights..next to a petrol station (Agip?) if you don't know where it is...it's on past Poplife.

The supermarket "Black Cumin seeds" sold here are not black cumin seeds. They are Kalonji seeds or rather Nigela/Black onion seeds. True black cumin seeds are completely different and aren't available here in the Supermarkets.

very true and I have never seen the black version of the "normal shape" cumin seed in Paphos (Bunium bulbocastanum):

" I want the nigella sativa"..then earlier advice stands..that's the black cumin seed you get in Cyprus. I buy mine from the Smart store on the "Polis Road". They have a good selection of other herbs and spices. I have not seen the oil though.

There are quite many varieties of "cumin",

Carum carvi is mostly used in Scandinavia, Germany, Eastern Europe and Jewish cuisine to be had with cabbage and also in cakes, bread (Souther Germany, Austria) and gulash.

Nigella (not related to the above) is prominent in the cuisine of the Middle East and used a peppery spice, also referred to as "black onion seed" . Often to be found in Iranian bread.

Trachyspermum ammi Sprague, not related to either of the above, tastes a lot like thyme....

Very different things for very different purposes.

most know carum carvi as caraway, Trachyspermum ammi Sprague is also known as ajwain or carom.

Be careful if cooking a "curry" in Germany...from memory kümmel is caraway and kreuzkümmel is cumin..now I don't like caraway in my "curry" ..just on bread.

Just guessing from the "Gisela" handle I suspect she might be looking for Kümmel=Carum carvi. And that is difficult to come bye here in Cyprus...
amazon.de sell it for @5€/500grammes and will mail it to Cyprus....
My own reserves are gone, unfortunately.

50 metres or so down there on your left is a Romanian owned shop with signs advertising cheap flights and phone calls, but there are also signs for oriental food products. If you go in there he has just about everything you could ever want in the way of spices and pulses.

Also, in the arcade opposite is a lady who sells Sri Lankan foods and spices."

dont wan't to speak for Gisela.. but if you go back a few posts she says quite clearly says she wanted Nigella Sativa.

Smart (probably others too) sell it. As I said above - "green field" brand..150gram clear plastic "tub" with green screw-on "lid". Label says "MAVROKOKKOZ" & underneath that in English "BLACK CUMIN SEEDS".

Watching the cricket so wanted a quick meal..just sauteed some hake "cutlets" in a bit of good olive-oil and nigella seeds..juice of a large lemon, rock-salt and black pepper to finish off..5 minutes if that. Served with some pasta and vegetables..lovely.
