Pruning Chrysanthemums

Postby lofos-jan » 26 Dec 2012 10:51

My chrysanthemums have finished blooming - I have ground growing ones and tall bush ones. I want to know if I should cut them back to ground level now and whether the base needs protecting with mulch. This is the advice on some sites but again not specific to Cyprus. Any info appreciated.

In warmer climates, a bit of dead heading will be OK for most Chrysanthemums after bloom, but in areas with sub-zero winters, freezing and thawing of the soil will heave the plant out of the ground and kill the roots. Depends on the height above SL in Cyprus of course.

So when is the best time in Cyprus to prune them?

I would prune them now but how much beyond dead heading depends on your local weather conditions in terms of minimum temperatures experienced in your height over sea level. Experiment if you are in the higher areas !!

You can just dead head them; simples and should be OK.
