Hi Dee. I am sorry I missed answering your question, I was too excited at nearly bumping into Graham. I don't know what the plans show re the sea wall. But I notice that the re bars are sticking up out of the wall in places. This possibly suggests that there is more concrete to go on top yet. They are also putting infill out on the shore. This is to take some of the force out of the waves.
I remember pictures on the web site (Jim's maybe) of the road to Coral bay being washed away. They would not want that to happen on the new promenade.

Best wishes. Trev..

Great pictures Trev.

Refresh my memory - how far is the promenade going up to. Is it up as far as McDonalds?

Hi Molly. I think it is a little past McDonald's. With the sea on your right, the works are up to the first restaurant on the right. I think it may be called the Seagull. I think it may be on previous pics.

You will have to go and Promenade down there this weekend!!

Good luck. Trev..

Am I right in thinking that early last year it was reported the promenade would carry on around the point and past the Lighthouse?

Hi Trev,
Thanks for your reply to my Q. Hope that you're right about the rebars, in any case a nice stone (faced?) sea wall would add to the look of the prom. - I think.
Dennis
I think last year that they talked about extending the prom to the East. It might be a bit close to the Archaeological site if they were to do earth works to the west.
However I think that I heard something on the local news the other night about some money being spent restoring the lighthouse. Did anyone else hear that?

Thanks for that confirmation Mark.
I am sorry that I have no information about the lighthouse area. Maybe someone else will supply the answer.

Hi all,
Will the likes of The Seagull be compensated for the effect this work has had on their business ?
They will not be alone there must be scores of businesses affected by this.
Anyone know ?

The photos are great - thanks to all who took the trouble to take and then post them on the site, it's very interesting to see what's going on
It's also reassuring to see that blue sky still there - here in very wet and windy Wales it's been so dark and grey, the last time I caught a quick glimpse of the sun was last Saturday!
Looking forward to coming over in March...... Sue.

Hi All. Well I made my usual Friday visit to the promenade road works this lunchtime. Some said it would be good to just spread sand and have a large beach area..... Some said they thought it was to be covered in block paving....... Well, I hope you like Black Tarmac

Well as you can see, particularly from the last picture there was a definite shortage of sun this afternoon. In fact in Polemi we had at least our fair share of rain.

No. The seafront shops and restaurants are now all closed and inaccessible. There is some suggestion that a measure of access may be restored next month.

Maybe they've changed their minds... and putting it back the way it was

It may be that they see a tarmac base as the easiest way to get it level - and then lay paving over that... although their drainage and levels better be spot on!

It would be interesting to see what the gale is doing to the front at the moment.

As to compensation From what I've been told by one of the shopkeepers concerned there will not be any. In fact they are going to be charged for any improvements to their shop frontages. .......and they aren't all rip off merchants. :smt006

Hi,

Went for a walk today (Thursday, all the snows gone) down by the harbour they have started to tarmac the construction area, if it is only going to be tarmac it's going to look pretty horrible I reckon! but hey, what do I know!

Going back to the lighthouse area what they are doing is creating a nice new crazy paved pathway, I think all the way round to the beach. It has been started & should be an added bonus for the area.

Looks to me that work is well progressed with reinforced sea wall advanced and road/paving sub base placed, under ground services all sorted. Progress looks good to me, I could see this finishing by May '08 allright. Looks like there is still gonna be traffic on bitmac and maybe block paving for promenade behind sea wall for pedestrians. Good to see they kept the trees. I would give this the benefit of the doubt... let's wait and see... I expect it to be an improvement, and as someone else mentioned an incentive for traders to upgrade too. Will be over in March and again in May to inspect progress. Thanks to all for the photos and for the Village Pics and snow photos too on other threads.

Yes it's freezing outside, snowing and a bitterly cold north easterly coming off the sea.
Keep the photos coming all, I'm sure the finished product will be great.

The stone for the harbour road is coming from China.
The stone for the pedestrian road from the castle to Helios bay is from Cyprus.

Harbour

Postby alan Clark » 03 Feb 2008 15:24

Hi everyone,
Went for a walk today and you could walk all along the newly tarmacked road from the car park to the Seagul and Tea 4 Two restaurants. Made a pleasant change. Its not yet finished of course but you could see what they're doing. Wouldn't it be nice if this whole new roadway was open to pedestrians only, if only on the Sunday?

Harbour Construction Work

Postby phil » 07 Feb 2008 15:44

Newcomer to site...

Hi and thanks so much to everyone who's provided pics & useful info about the building work.

We're planning on making our first visit to Paphos in April but are having second thoughts because of the ongoing building work.

We were looking forward to seeing the harbour and had intended to stay close by (not decided on hotel yet). The building work looks pretty extensive - is the whole harbour area, and the view, affected?

I'm guessing that the harbour is a main focal point in the town?

Should we postpone our visit until the work is finished? (would mean coming in April 2009)

Cheers

Harbour construction work

Postby alan Clark » 07 Feb 2008 16:03

Hi Phil,

You can still visit the harbour, the resaurants and the castle area but you cannot walk along the sea front at the moment, although they are getting along with it very fast, depends when you intend to come out whether or not it will be finished. Don't get a hotel near the works.

Hi Phil. Welcome to CyprusLiving. The heading "Harbour construction work" is actually a little misleading. The works are not at the harbour but along the promenade from Rose Corner, to just past MacDonalds. They are not affecting the harbour but the car park park entrance is through the overflow area. We live here and I can say that it would not stop me from visiting, but you will probably get some more comments on that.

Good luck. Trev..

Don't delay your visit as there is so much more to Cyprus than Paphos Harbour. Hire a car and visit some of the inland villages as well as the usual tourist spots.

If you are looking for a hotel I can recommend the Cynthiana Beach Hotel just outside Paphos on the road to Coral Bay. Rates are reasonable and most rooms have a great sea view.
They have a good web site at cynthianahotel.com

I am sure that most posters would advise you not to delay your visit. If you think of buying a property here you will find lots of excellent advice on CL.

Have a good trip.

Thanks all, seems it's not really worth delaying our holiday - so I'm now looking forward to it again!

As I'm not sure of the sea-front layout can someone suggest which hotels are too close to the building works. I'll then look for alternatives nearby - we'd prefer to stay within 15-20 minutes walking distance of the centre if possible.

Any suggestions? (possibly can't afford the 5*)
