Car Tax Scrapped

Does anyone know if this a rumour or the truth. I personally would like to see it happened but fear this is another rumour

I would be surprised if road tax was scrapped as I believe it is an EU policy to tax vehicles according to mpg and emissions , so older high emission gas guzzlers pay lots I did hear some new cars are so low emission they are tax free.
