Car bumper restoration.

Postby peatsie » 11 Jan 2016 11:55

We have a car on which the bumpers are fading and have lost their black colour. We used a spray that we were led to believe would restore the black colour. This did not work. Can anyone advise us on a product that we can buy to restore the black colour which will last and where we can get it. Any advice will be appreciated.

My mechanic swears by rubbing old oil into them - keeps them black & shiny anyway!

Liquid Cherry Blossom applied with a sponge then a spray of silicone to seal.

Whatever you apply tho won't last long in the summer months.

have used a Simoniz product labelled 'Jet Black Bumper Restorer'...colour enricher for black bumpers and trims...available most petrol stations....500ml for €9
Goes a long way which is handy, as the last post stated, whatever one uses, the remedy can be short lived with the sun .
Well pleased with my results, hence recommendation.

Go to Barry at ABC in Geroskipou Ind. Estate. He will respray them for you at a very reasonable rate. Better option than trying to restore with 'rub ons'

That is the best and permanent solution. Barry did mine last month, and the rest of the car ha ha.

I was not aware the black nylon type bumpers could be sprayed they are very flexible and surely the paint will just crack and fall off. The only solution I know is as above , clean with jetwash, let dry out and then use some silicon oil to soak into the surface, the idea of old engine oil probably works really well too, but what ever you use in this sun regular application is required.

The plastic panels on the bottom half of my car, and the front bumper as as you say, are flexible.
But they were painted before, and have just been included in a respray.
I always thought that coloured bumpers were painted and not a particular colour all through... I certainly know that Proton Savvy are black underneath the top colour.

I have a Jaguar. Its skirt is grey plastic, spray painted the same body color as the rest of the body. (as are the wing mirrors)

I was thinking of older cars where the black bumpers are as molded and not sprayed, eg 92 toyota corolla or 2003 combo van. seem to made of a plastic similar to a bucket or milk bottle. If you look into recycling it shows just how many different plastics there are and how different their properties are.

Thank you for all your help and suggestions. I visited ABC today and spoke to Barry as was suggested. Barry advised me that the reason the rear bumper was so discoloured wa that it had previously been the same colour as the car itself but had been rubbed down. I have agreed that the rear bumper will be colour coded back to the colour of the car and the front bumpers restored. There are a few other repairs also being carried out whilst the work is being done. The car has been booked in to have the work done over a couple of days from Monday.
