You can do it at any branch of the Co Op bank too, or just wait for JCC to return!

You can pay with any valid card on line via the main JCC site bigfathen.

Not sure at all how the local Authorities calculate motor taxation, do they guess it? I have a 1.4cc small car that cost's €45 this year, the wife also has an even smaller engine motor at 1.2cc yet hers is over €80 a year, only thing I can think of it is emissions her car is turbo charged but newer than mine so emissions should be lower.

Workings of the local taxation people here are baffling even to this day, many years after the first car we taxed.

Paying, yes all banks take payment, ours was paid at our local Coop bank in Tremithousa recently.

If you pay it within the required period, it should never be problem.

One thing that did surprise me last year was that if you have no valid MOT your insurance is void!!!

Sorry Jim and Trev, your car insurance is NOT void just because the vehicle does not have a valid test certificate and or tax.

It is a legal requirement that if insurance companies have accepted your monies and issued a certificate you have third party insurance.
That means that injured people have the facility to make a claim from you so ones vehicle is legal in the sense of having insurance.

However other claims under comprehensive insurance maybe effected depending on the circumstances.

Sorry Russ...

Well Russ tell that to our Cypriot neighbor, he is a local traffic cop, I believe what he tells me
no MOT at your own peril, your insurers will of course tell you.

Trev said MOT Russ, road tax is another matter.

If anyone wants to calculate how much they should be paying for Road Tax, have a look at this website

295Rus,

Surely if a vehicle has no MOT then the insurance companies can avoid making payments as they can say that the vehicle was not fit to drive and the insuree has voided the policy as I am sure that this would be one of the insuree's obligations under the policy.

Mike.

Thank you for that link, unfortunately it still does not explain why one of our motors is a 1.4cc and the other is a 1.2cc and this one is almost twice the taxation class, I recon they guess....very strange way of charge adjustment.

It depends when the car was first registered in Cyprus , if it was after 2014 then the road tax is calculated on co2 . Mine is a 1500cc 163 co2 so the road tax is 189€.

Morning..

Yes understand it will depend on emissions (Co2) but the 1.4cc car is an older 2008, and the newer one a 1.2cc is 2011, does not make sense why this is in a higher classification with almost double the tax charge, a truly mad system at our cost.

Jim, I'm guessing the 1.4cc is actually1398cc, so the tax should be €59.72

The 1.2cc likely to be 1198cc, so the tax should be €51.17

Total cost €110.89 whereas you have paid €125+ Seems hardly worth the hassle of contesting for just €12+ :|

Just paid Road Tax for 3 vehicles online...so you can be certain a deadline extension will be coming along any minute now

It's weird and wonderful world when it comes to Road Tax; for some mysterious reason the tax on our Vito van has come down from €246.80 last year to €182.36 this year - but actually rounded down to €182.

The L200's remain the same at €279.70.

2008 1598cc Vauxhall Astra €79 same as last year and 2014.

Using the table above, it ought to be €95

Got stopped three times within less than two minutes by police tonight, checking if we had road tax.
All in Pegeia, the ones that usually cough up first

The DoT road tax system is a complete shambles island wide. To all intents and purposes they make up the rules as they go along and don't seem capable of applying the regulations as given - I get the impression that quite often they don't understand the regs. themselves!
If you have a query with your road tax payments firstly check the details (specification of engine capacity etc) on your vehicle registration document to see that they are correctly listed (sometimes they aren't), if they are incorrect then go to DoT and get them corrected and make sure the amendment is made to the DoT computer record.
Once you are sure that your reg. document is correct then take it to DoT and ask them to check and verify the amount you should be paying - perhaps this could alternatively be checked at the Citizens Advice office in Butcher Boy road. Don't just complain about it - DO SOMETHING.

I am not in CY until early March but will do just that then.

I have checked all details on JCC website and they are correct

I have e mailed RTD 3 times but no reply:I will try Citizens Advice Bureau when I come back.

Incidentally the vehicle is classed as "MPV"-should that make any difference?

I have a 2008 reg Nissan Note for which I paid €55 road tax, same as last year. My friend has a 2015 reg Honda Jazz, for which he paid €75 road tax. Both cars are lss than 1400cc. I paid using JCC, he paid through the bank. Why are 2 cars with very similar engine sizes taxed this way. I should have thought that the owner of the much newer Honda would be paying the same or less tax than the Nissan due to having lower emissions.

You would have thought, yes Dee, the system is open it seems to different interpretations, we purchased two small cars to be a little more Green, how can an older Jazz cost less than a VWPolo that is newer and a smaller 1.2cc engine, it is turbo charged maybe this has a cost difference, but they never asked this question, stupid baffling system I feel..in fact our Jazz tax was less than your friends €49's explain that one?? :-s

Seeing you have until 10th March to pay this year, they were very early with their checks! Presumably checking still for last year

Kill1 , it's because the 2008 car comes under the old system of charging on cc , the 2015 car comes under charging on emissions .

But as it's perfectly legal to be driving without having paid this year's tax until 10th March and they can't take any action against you until after that date (assuming no deadline extensions!), it doesn't seem to me the best use of their time to be stopping drivers and issuing reminders! Makes no difference to me as I've already paid but I'd have hoped they could have been doing something more useful!
