Car Prices

Postby D&P » 23 Jun 2016 20:58

From September we will be spending about 6 months of the year in Paphos and one of the very first things we will be doing is buying a car; second hand but not too old. We have started looking at what is available online and very few dealers show prices which tends to indicate that someone who knows nothing about cars (me) is going to get seriously ripped off. A local I was chatting to during our last visit warned me about this as well. Couple that with the fact that so many cars are so old that they are almost vintage, with maintenance issues likely, I can see myself making an expensive mistake. If anyone can recommend a dealer who displays their prices up front, but doesn't necessarily have an internet presence, and can be trusted not to sell junk to the unwary, we would appreciate it. By the same token is there a dealership to avoid? PM with anything contentious!

Many thanks

Dave, I have been to and used many dealers in town, without doubt the best is Demetri Anastaiou tel 993347763....I have bought three motors from Demetri even my neighbour used him, good warranties and he takes PX not many do here, all the motors are his not commissioned sale cars. All of his cars have clearly written history millage/kilometers and price on every car.

To find his place of business, from Pafos towards the airport and about 500 meters from the airport turn you will see a cage like structure, that is his showroom, mostly smaller cars and fairly new not registered in Cyprus, he does this for you, my last little car a VW Polo turbo 1.2 is a little gem, the wife loves it more than me and the dog!!

Happy Motoring. :-bd

A little tale from me.....

We arrived in Cyprus in March 2004 and hubby found our first vehicle about 3 weeks later - a Mazda double cabin 2.5L engine on an E registered plate. (I believe that was 1995 registered but can't be exactly certain). Hubby wanted one and it was suitable for what he was doing and when we had visitors. We had a mechanic living opposite us at the time, spoke barely any English but with a little help hubby asked him to have a look at it. Oh yes, he looked at alright - he almost stripped the double cab down to the ground. Some little bit of fixes were made at the expense of the car sales lot and we bought it.

In April the following year (2005) as I had a job working shifts I needed my own vehicle and bought a Mazda 323 NEO automatic - again on an E registered plate. We paid Cy£ 1800.

We had viewed many cars that morning all the way from the west side of Limassol to Linopetra roundabout and this was almost back to the end of Makarios on the way back home. I was mighty miffed at the sales people so was steaming when I arrived at the car sales place. Told the young lad exactly what I wanted and he must have took one look and felt my vibes - so immediately called for his boss.... who came and pointed out 4 cars which fitted my list.

We sat inside all 4 of them. Fell in love with the looks and feel of the last one, turned the engine on, had a rev of the engine a few times and bought it. No test drive, no nothing - we never moved it around on the forecourt.

We left Cyprus at the end of April 2014 to return back home to UK due to family illness.

We still had both vehicles, both still running, both still going through the MOTs every 2 years.
We sold them both before we left - no problems at all.

We've just bought a car back here in UK off the local garage forecourt (selling for a shop owner in the village). Again, we liked the look, we sat inside - it felt right, we ran the engine - it sounded perfect..... didn't drive anywhere. Looked at a few others and after a couple of weeks of deliberation over this one or a Skoda Fabia (2005) with only 18,000 miles on the clock we went back and bought the one that felt right for us.

This has been the story of my life purchasing cars. The youngest car I ever bought was just 6 months old. We've always had second hand cars and it's always been me who does the choosing. We've only had one car that we had a total meltdown with and that was a Volvo 340 which developed a monster of an oil leak. It was cheaper to buy another car than replace the engine!

Again, a bit like buying houses - it's a gut instinct purchase :)

Don't worry too much and if there's one you really like the look of, ask any mechanic who lives very close to you but not too close to the car sales lot if he will check it out for you. ;)

If anything, it will be entertaining!

And, you don't have to know the mechanic but if anything else, he could become your friend if anything goes wrong.
