Swimming pool regulations

Postby David and Carolyn » 08 Aug 2016 20:52

As I understand it the current legislation relating to so-called "public swimming pools" is derived from regulations dating from 1992 and 1996.

My questions are-

1. The regulations are only published in Greek on the government website. Are any translations into English available anywhere?

2. As I understand it, the regulations classify pools on apartment complexes as "public", so that they are then subject to the applicable licensing requirements. However, I have seen statements on the internet that pools which are less than 1.4 m. in depth are excluded from this. Is this correct ?

3. Do the regulations clearly state ( either expressly or by implication) that they apply to pools constructed before the regulations came into force?

Any assistance on the above would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I *think* someone once replied to this sort of thread saying that the rules in CY were not compliant with EU law amd were thus unenforceable :-\

Hi David,

Please refer to my post at viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36694#p271119

To answer your questions:

1. The regulations are only available in Greek.

2. Answer in article above

3. As far as I am aware the regulations do not state whether they're only applicable after 1992/96.

Hi,

I've been busy looking for swimming pool regulations but I cant seem to find anyone who will commit to commenting on size of pool or depth for a lifeguard. The EU regulations are see below (Point 9.3.2) but I've been told this is Cyprus and we use Cyprus Law!!!!

That's correct. Swimming pool standards were the subject of a question raised in the European Parliament in 2011. You can read the question and the reply at http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/get ... XML+V0//EN

You can find the consolidated text of the law at http://cylaw.org/nomoi/enop/non-ind/199 ... index.html but this will not really help you.

Nigel

Thank you for the postings. Can you confirm your understanding of the status of the Google Translate regulations? These are marked " draft , 2013". They refer to the " Swimming Pools Act" but do not give its date, so it is unclear to me whether they are a draft in anticipation of the application of the EU rules- they do, for example, refer to a requirement for certain individuals to be Cypriot or EU citizens, or a draft under the 1990s laws. The Cyprus govt website does not refer to any regulations made 2013 or later in relation to swimming pools, only to the 1990s laws.

David

Hi David

Google translate only provides an approximate translation of the text. It will be best if you speak to a swimming pool supplier in your area - they will know the current regulations.

Hi David

Please ignore the link to the regulations I posted - they are the ones for Greece not Cyprus. (I've amended the post)
