The new Limassol marina

Postby Happy in Cyprus » 30 Apr 2016 00:34

Heard and read lots about it - and of course have seen Julie's pics - but yesterday for the first time we enjoyed a family day out at the new Limassol marina. What an amazing place! Still not fully complete - I would hazard a guess at 70% - but it's already a classy, elegant destination, whether or not you're interested in boats. An old-style fishing harbour sits alongside some very exotic and expensive 'boys toys'. There's a range of cafes and eateries to suit all budgets. We had a meal at Remezzos and found the prices very reasonable. But it was busy and we had to wait 20 minutes for a table, even at 11.30am. There's also a brand new fish tavern, a high-end steak restaurant (not yet open I don't think), some upmarket restaurants and the usual pizza and fast food outlets. The place was actually busier than some of the photos below suggest.

The marina-side homes are under construction, as can be seen in one of the pics further down. I have no doubt that over time these will have no difficulty in selling. If you're a boaty from northern climes - and rather wealthy to boot - this is a marvellous place to be.

Visiting the new Limassol marina makes for a great day out. Although there is multi-storey car parking onsite, we parked about 1 km east in the esplanade car parks - free yesterday as it was a bank holiday. I have to say that I thought the whole tourist experience along the seafront in Limassol was first class.

I've gone past that stage Jim.

With regard to that 'Iron FX' yacht, as the boat was leaving the quay my wife piped up: "Don't they need the sails up to get out of the harbour"

Thanks for the super snaps 'Happy in Cyprus' I too share your enthusiasm for the venue..my first remarks having seen the layout and quality of construction was that for once 'they' had got something right.

Jim, I am reminded of the seafarers adage that the best two times of owning a boat are:

1) When you buy it

2) When you sell it - like aeroplanes, usually much harder to sell than to buy

Streets, even before we got to the marina I was blown away by the tourist promenade which stetches for kilometres east of the marina. Paddling pools, nice green landscaped areas, quality childrens play areas (with facilities for disabled children), timber promenade areas, jetties that go out into the sea and so on. It lacked nothing and really was high on presentation.

No problems Lloyd I can assure you I will never buy a boat, unless my numbers come up.

Great pics - I was at a loose end what to do tomorrow - may take a trip down for a gander.

We used to have a cabin cruiser a while back. A Picton Dominator -

- that isn't ours in the pic - it was white with a red go faster stripe, which was needed due to (if memory serves) a rather arthritic 20hp outboard. Still, once it built up a head of steam, the prow used to rise up out of the water just enough to suggest it meant business.

It was fine while we were cruising up and down the Thames, but an ill-informed decision to move onto the open sea tolled the death knell. Constant battering from the elements at the harbour meant every other weekend was spent doing some sort of repairs or emergency maintenance. When she broke free during a particularly vicious storm and clobbered another boat, that was enough. Luckily boats do keep their value, and after remedial action and a fresh lick of paint, we sold her for slightly more than we originally paid, but the last few months turned us off boat ownership for life :P
