Berlin market attack suspect killed in shoot out

CM was the first to publish the good news:

Berlin market attack suspect ‘killed in shootout in Italy’

A man believed to be the suspect in the Berlin Christmas market truck attack was killed in a shoot-out in a suburb of the northern Italian city of Milan on Friday, a security source told Reuters.

Italy’s interior minister was to hold a news conference at 10.45am (0945 GMT), the ministry said.

A short video posted on the website of Italian magazine Panorama suggested the shooting happened before dawn, with police gathered around a cordoned-off area in the dark.

The report was one of several conflicting accounts on the whereabouts of the 24-year-old Tunisian Anis Amri.

A man matching his description was seen in Aalborg in northern Denmark, the Danish police tweeted on Friday, saying people should keep away from the area as it had an ongoing operation there.

Amri was also was caught on camera by police on a regular stake-out at a mosque in Berlin’s Moabit district early on Tuesday a few hours after the attack, Germany’s rbb public broadcaster reported.

Good, saves on money keeping him in jail, pity it doesn't happen more often.

Italien police is not messing around - well prepared in case of an attack.
Even normal traffic control is always with 2 armed policeman, one pointing his
automatic weapon at you. Have doubts if the Berlin Police could do it in this case, they are
much too careful!!

Personally, I find it quite incredible, if not extremely concerning, that the terrorist apparently managed to travel from Germany into France, and from there into Italy without
being apprehended. He was only stopped by chance in the end as a result of a routine check. This was "the most wanted man in Europe"!

Me, personally, glad he is dead, for many reasons including the ones made by other posters.

BUT and a BIG BUT

I read statically that most UK police officers who shoot and kill 'villains' subsequently retire from PTSD or similar - it appears to wreck their lives - if this i true I am very concerned.

You mean to say you do not have terrorists, and foiled terrorist plots, in the UK? That's news to me

This is too late for the heroic driver of the truck as he is dead, but....

Campaign raises $170,000 for family of “heroic” Polish truck driver

December 24, 2016 World News Leave a comment

A crowdfunding campaign has raised over $170,000 for the family of Polish truck driver Lukasz Urban who was murdered as he apparently tried to seize back control of his vehicle as it was used in an attack on a Berlin Christmas market on Monday.

The campaign was started by British truck driver Dave Duncan on Tuesday, a day after a man believed to be Anis Amri – shot dead by police on Friday – attacked Lukasz and ploughed the Polish man’s truck into a Christmas market, killing 12 people.

Lukasz, 37, was found dead in the cabin of the truck with multiple stab wounds and a gunshot wound, Urban’s cousin Ariel Zurawski said.

Germany’s Bild newspaper reported that Urban’s autopsy indicated he was stabbed while still alive, apparently trying to grab the steering wheel to prevent his attacker from driving the truck into the crowded market.

“I started this with the intention of raising a few hundred pounds for the family from good-hearted British truck drivers,” Duncan said on the GoFundMe fundraising website. “Amazing generosity from everybody literally all around the world…..incredible.”

The amount raised so far is around 20 times the average annual net salary in Poland.

On Friday, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said Urban’s teenage son and wife would receive a special pension, calling the driver “heroic”.

Amri, a Tunisian, was shot dead by police in Italy. (Reuters)
