Primetel upgrade and testing

Postby juliesewell » 02 Oct 2014 17:50

An interesting phone call received this afternoon....

We received an email the other week to say Primtel would be carrying out some maintenance work in our area last Sunday in the very early hours of the morning. I noticed the speed seems to have increased after this but only mentioned it to my other half following the phone call from our ISP today. He says the same, the speed and performance is definitely better for him running the laptop via WiFi.

The phone call today?
As large users and following the new upgrade they're looking for people to test it and for a fee of €5 per month extra (reduced from €10 per month for the next 12 months) we would be upgraded to 32mbs from 12mbs.
Would we be interested? No question - Yes please! :D

Man with a new box will be arriving to install it w/c 13 October.

Beware the speeds they quote. They are taken from their own server in Limassol by mostly fibre optic.. If you take a test from Nicosia or even outside of Cyprus, you will be surprised how much slower it is.

We shall see..... but 12 to 32 sounds bloody marvellous!

What's the average for Cyprus these days, does anyone know? No idea what it is in UK these days but I know they seem to be speedy Gonzales....

We did a speed test the other night when we were having problems. Using their server it showed between 6 and 7 (we pay for 8mb)
Using a server in Israel it showed a speed of 3.29. Not acceptable in my view. We have giving them a right dressing down and waiting to see what happens.

Our new box was delivered and connected on Monday morning by the PrimeTel technician even before I'd left to go to work... he did mention the older boxes are just not powerful enough to provide the speeds any more.

We're now waiting for either a phone call or a text message to come sometime this week to let us know when we've been switched over to warp speed.

Hudswell is your box a white one that stands up rather than lying down?

My new modem is white & stands on the floor; annoyingly! However, certainly faster, but not exactly warp speed ;)

Hudswell, when you say "box" are you talking about the router. I'm with Primetel for 2 years, have black router. Lately, I've had trouble using my lap top at same time as streaming tv via Mag250.

Did you experience this before your router was replaced?

Kevking yes it is the router and I joined Primetel back in April and I have a white box and have had no problems with it. Ask them to change it.

First report back from hubby who is at home while I'm here at work, is that the first speed test he's done is showing 29.62mbs.

I shall certainly be giving it some hammer later this evening when I get home.

So far, 32.74mbs is the best achieved.

An interesting read in the Cyprus Mail online version today:

THE FACT that Cyprus is lagging in areas where other EU countries are advancing rapidly is hardly newsworthy. So it comes as absolutely nobody’s surprise that Cypriots pay too much on their internet connection, at the same time putting up with slower speeds than their EU counterparts.

Rest of the article is here on the link:

It is good that someone is investing here. Should push the rest to do it

In answer to the uk speeds we recently upgraded our uk business to Bt fibre optic. Now getting a very steady and realize 67mb. If we were nearer the exchange it would have been more. And got a friend wirpth virgin vp able getting just over 100!!!!

And to think when I came here it was ISDN if u could afford it!!
