Noddy Guide for a newbie?

Postby Al & Sue » 01 Jun 2015 15:16

Hi All,

I have been trawling the boards on this forum for useful info towards my planned move to Cyprus later this year/early next, and there certainly is a wealth of it, and how people are watching UK TV is of considerable interest. I am fairly tech savvy, but some of the terminology used, and services mentioned are a whole new world to me - could somebody "in the know" put up a basic guide on how to get started?

My assumptions at the moment are that the ultra large Sat dishes that were everywhere are now largely redundant, and internet TV streaming is the way to go, but what device, what service, and of course what costs are involved?

I have a couple of pretty new state of the atr Samsung smart TV's that I will be shipping across, along with Blu Ray players, and recording boxes, and do not know what will and will not work. Will the smart apps of the TV detect that I an not in the UK and refuse to function, and is this why people use a vpn? what about Android, IPTV boxes and amazon firestick, do these need to be specially loaded for Cyprus?, and is it best to hold off buying anything until I am in the country? so many questions, there are obviously some very knowledgeable folks on here, so I hope that the mists will soon be clearing

Thanks

Al

Hi Al & Sue, welcome.

Firstly, of course, you will need internet!!!!

At its simplest, you will want an Android box loaded with an app called Filmon, for UK (Freeview) tv. It will need to be capable of running another app called XBMC if you wish to view other things (most are ).

Some things, but not Filmon, will require a VPN

I think that if you wish to use the apps on your smart tv ( not forgetting that you will have apps on the box ) you will also need to install a smart dns on a second router - maybe others can advise on this.

Hope this helps, Pete

Lots of you tube info out there on the Android media boxes, check for Kodi, TVAddons etc loads of addons ,showing films, TV shows such as Genesis, SportsDevil, Free-streams, Navi X, AAA streams, RobinHood project to name a few good ones.
All easy to install from zip files and subscription free no monthly fees. You will need a minimum of 2 mb Internet obviously works better the more mb you have.

Hi,

For your smart TVs and all other devices, you should consider UnoTelly as your DNS provider. Quite cheap and no loss of bandwidth and can load on all your devices for the one subscription. Very good website full of easy tutorials.

Get a Mag250 saves all that bother of loading, you will need a provider but that is easy enough, get everything and more than you get in the UK including Sky's programing plus hundreds of films and the same for FM radio, you will need Internet of course Computer SOS do packages, I pay to Sensible Satellites €25 a month, a bargain.

I have a good make PVR now in a box in my attic..most Mag systems have catch up, something else some media units do not have.

Thanks for all the useful responses guys, got some researching to do, but Mag 250 looking good.

Alan, planning to be out by end of year, joined by Sue summer '16, looking to get a property close to Paphos, possibly Tala, Peiga, or similar, recce trip this month for a week, return sept/oct with shortlist, then go for it, have asked for info on villages in the general section, all opinions appreciated.

Al

There is a choice of villages, many of us prefer some life in our retirement and so have opted for Pegeia. Close to Coral Bay, shops bars and entertainment are at hand.

Hire a car and have a good look around.

Like Jim, wife and I just want an easy life. So with a Mag250 and a subscription to a service provider like NTV (there are many others though), watching TV is as simple as having a Sky package in the UK, with dedicated remote, EPG and 14 day catch-up. Perfect viewing quality 99.9% of the time and no need for catch-up services from BBC, ITV or Ch 4 - which I found to be a pain in the backside to understand and use anyway.

Personally just can't be bothered with all kinds of obscure boxes, having to download programmes, add-ons and Apps. If we want to watch TV, it's in the living room...and it's as simple as that. No need for it in the office (we're open-plan) or in the bedroom. We're truly simple folk in this household =))
