However, since my last visit when I posted some photo's when I returned about 2 weeks ago there were workmen everywhere and I could see that progress in completing was visible. Some of the expensive footpaths had been laid and even tarmac laid between some of the kerbstones. It's still a nightmare trying to get where you want to be though!

I had to visit a shop in Makarious Ave in the Old Town a couple of days ago. It is still a health and safety nightmare. Although there is work going on it seems slow. The road is being worked on in sections. But whether it is covered with reinforcing rods or has had a concrete base laid, it is still very hazadous. The pavements have not been worked on. There are are open amd protruding man holes, some without covers, there are iron rods with sharp points sticking up! The thresholds of shops are about 18" to 2ft higher than the unfinished road, so access to shops that are open is via duckboards or a random step made from left over construction material.only venture there if you have to! On the day that I went even access to the Kinyras hotel was very difficult, even dangerous for any visitors staying there..

I would certainly advise anyone not to try to walk through the old town at night as the street lights have yet to be fitted. It would be even more difficult in the dark.
