Impending water cuts this year, or not

Postby kazanddave » 24 Feb 2016 19:10

It seems that due to the lack of rainfall this winter the reservoirs are quite a bit lower than this time last year. I hope we don't get another drought.

The Government says they won't be necessary....... I'm assuming the desalination plants will work overtime then!

=))

There will be NO water shortage due to the level of the dams and the DESALINATION PLANTS. This was stated by the mimister. Howec=ver this will not apply to Pegia. =))

Happened to pass close by the Asprokremnos Dam yesterday and took the pics below which illustrate the desperately low water level.

Compare the water level against the tower with this video I made in Feb 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3hO0Uhv1BU

Ah, those were the days!

Yep look at the % of water the dams have lately, less than half compered to last year at Asprokremos.

It must be 6 weeks ago that our Landlady, who lives overlooking Evretou Dam, told us how low it was so must be significantly lower now. I can't remember having an Autumn with so little rain in the 10 years we have been here.

Just been looking at the govt water development dept figures for the reservoirs. Roughly, both the Asprokremnos, which supplies Paphos and the Everitou which supplies much of Polus and surrounding villages have about half the amount of water which they had this time last year at the same time. This year the Asprokremnos is 35.68% full, the Everitou is 31.22% full. There has been very little rainfall in Oct and so far in November this year.
Also Paphos will be the only town in Cyprus which does not have desalination facilities. The temporary one which we used to have is being dismantled!
Unless we do have substantial winter rains the water situation in the Paphos area will be dire next year.

I thought that Dee but Vicky seemed to know what was what...

I once spent six weeks on the Greek Island Levkas that had then no water storage Dams, it was total desalination, the water tasted terrible, salty and disgusting, you could not make hot drinks from the tap water, I do not notice this in Pafos, but I did know they were going to do this, so that plant has been dismantled?

I'm sure the rains will come, and when they do look out!! :)

I really hope that the rains will come, Jim! But who knows, will they come this winter or the next one?
I read in the paper that the temporary desalination plant that Paphos had was being decomissioned and will be dismantled and removed by the end of the year.. Apparently the leasing agreement runs out then. The previous mayor had decided that having it was un necessary because at the time the dams were full. He thought that it was costing too much to maintain....

Maybe Pickles has some "inside information"?
