Taking a dip

Postby jeffrey64 » 09 Dec 2016 11:36

Hi Mainly due to warnings posted on this forum, I am well aware of some of the dangers of swimming in the sea around the Paphos coastline. My question is how early in the year could I go swimming in the sea and feel relatively comfortable taking into account the sea temperature?

My daughter and granddaughter swam off the coast at Coral Bay on New Years Eve a couple of years ago. Yes, I think they are crazy too!

Hi,
I swim in the sea in Cyprus, at least once a week all year around.
The water is at its coldest in February and warmest in August.
I would say, for the average person, a comfortable temperature would be in mid April/May.

There is an all year round swimming club in Paphos who use the municipal baths site next to the harbour every morning! One of them is Panicos, one of the owners of Time Out kiosk who swears that he never misses a day unless the sea is very rough and dangerous and is always telling me to take the plunge and not be afraid.......he says that the sea temperature now is around 21 C. which is warmer than it usually gets in summer in the south of England???

The heart doctor my wife went to see last year told me that he swims daily in the sea, right throughout the year.

Quite mad!

The earliest I've swum in the sea (at Limassol) was March and the latest was towards the end of November.

Swimming pools (public unheated pools) much later in the summer - not until May at the earliest but have managed it at the early part of November.

There's only been the very odd time when I thought I may have chanced the sea in the early part of December but that was when we had some exceptionally good winters when my parents were here (2011 or 2012) for a month from early November and we were still getting 24 to 25 Celsius....

However, we used to see a Cypriot guy go down to Curium beach at around 2pm every afternoon (summer and all winter) where he would walk the length from the stretch of beach by the horse riding stable to the far end (Sunshine Restaurant) a couple of times then he would go in for a swim. Brave chap!

Me and my Son were in the sea at the St George two weeks ago, it was fresh but fine once you were in, not sure we will give it another bash until April time though.

A Close Cypriot friend of ours swims in the sea near the harbour everyday including Christmas, She spend 30 mins every morning from 7 am then goes to work. 8)
I started off with nothing and have most of it left !

The sea is used most days throughout the year, it is in fact fairly warm certainly compared to out door pools.

This morning..

I swim every day first thing in the morning along with others on Riccos Beach. I shall also take part in the Boxing Day splash for charity. Yes, the sea is cooler but it is most certainly tolerable. Come and see!
