Kale

Postby LouiseCastricum » 06 Dec 2015 16:22

I wanted to go to Akourdalia market to buy fresh kale, but couldn't make it. Has anyone seen kale in Paphos recently? Maybe at Garden of Edem?

I have it on very good authority that the Health Food shop in Tremithousa has it - they're the people who are at the Herb Garden Market!

After you turn left from the Polis Rd (at the Paps Bakery corner), continue along the road, past the Paphiakpos book shop on the right, then the herb store is just afterwards on the LHS. It's a stone building, set back a little from the road.

Is it labelled as 'kale' in the shops, or maybe 'greens' or something else? Wanted to buy some to put in smoothies.

How much kale do people eat/drink? It can apparently affect the function of the thyroid if taken in high doses.

However, there's probably evidence that completely contradicts that. ;)

Louise...

A glorious way to eat kale. However, in North-West Europe people believe it should have experienced frost before harvesting (makes for some sweetness). How can one substitute? In the freezer?

Yes, wash the leaves and put them in the freezer overnight. Next day you can 'break' them very easily.

First time I have seen it in Paphos. Bought curly Kale in AlphaMega today - big bunch for €1.05 - part of the GardenFresh range. It's obviously new in as the cashier took a good look at it as she didn't know what it was. 8)

Hi Louise

Cycleband is a small supermarket on the Polis rd just about next to the Esso Garage. They have many reasonable items in there - especially detergents etc.

The shop referred to as Cycleband changed its name from that to Ikoagora ages and ages ago, although the old sign hasn't been removed from the shop frontage.

The leaflets that they distribute all say Ikoagora.

We have it in a box in the garden. It is like spinach, keep cutting what you want and leave it in. Ours is 5 years old and still sprouting. Snails are a nuisance. Thet like it a little too much!

Darrow you say you grow in a box etc but are you in Cyprus or UK. If Cyprus are you on the coast or do you have some altitude. I am looking to give it a go in Cyprus shortly.

ferret..

we are in Cyprus. We bought seeds in U.K., but i think they are available here in some supermarkets. they grow all year, but fare best in Summer with some shade. We use netting and grow a few plants in a large box. we did try to grow fresh this year because the main stems are quite thick now on the old ones. unfortunately the slugs and/or snails copped the lot! once snails get in the soil they lay eggs and it's difficult to eradicate them. not so bad on adult plants if a few leaves get eaten. Kale is a favourite of ours and is similar in taste to savoy cabbage which is common in U.K. but i have never seen it here in Cyprus.

Forgot to say, we are not on the coast, but not high up either. if you grow in a box you can move them around so they don't get the full heat of summer sun and cover anyway with thick net. good luck!

We stayed on in northern Germany when I was discharged from the Army in '92 and Kale was a much awaited addition to our table in the season.

The Germans eat it with boiled potatoes and a "Brawn Sausage", possibly with boiled belly pork and Kassler (similar to Gammon) and my wife used to cook it in a vegetable stock for added flavour. We were always told that you should not take the crop until the frost had bitten it as this apparently turns the carbs into sugar, thus making it sweeter to the taste. (Nothing worse than bitter Brassicas).

I won't go into the health benefits as we all had those drummed into us a kids. Super-Food? I don't know about that but it is a very tasty alternative if you can find it.

Slight change of tack, but my wife actually bought rhubarb in the Garden of Eden a week or two back. First time we've found it out here.

Have to say I have bought fresh rhubarb in Paps for many years and I've seen it in Alpha Mega.

I have been having a chuckle here. We grew KALE on the farm back in bleak fenland of Lincolnshire. It was grown specifically to feed the cattle only. Not for human consumption.

Lincoln, well aware Kale was considered cattle fodder but I have eaten it all my life! Along with other greens and veg, including cooked lettuce and lettuce soup! The lettuce here is sometimes tough but makes excellent soup!

Kales does appear to have incredible credentials. From a quick search on the internet:

10 Proven Benefits of Kale (No. 1 is Very Impressive)
By Kris Gunnars, BSc | November, 2015 | 739,812 views

It is definitely one of the healthiest and most nutritious plant foods in existence.

Kale is loaded with all sorts of beneficial compounds… some of which have powerful medicinal properties.

Here are 10 health benefits of kale, that are supported by science.

1. Kale is Among The Most Nutrient Dense Foods on The Planet

Before we get to all the benefits, let me briefly explain what kale is…

Kale is a popular vegetable, a member of the cabbage family (Brassica oleracea).

It is related to cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens and brussels sprouts.

There are many different types of kale. The leaves can be green or purple in color, and have either a smooth or curly shape.

The most common type of kale is called curly kale or Scots kale, which has green and curly leaves and a hard, fibrous stem.

A single cup of raw kale (about 67 grams or 2.4 ounces) contains (1):

Vitamin A: 206% of the RDA (from beta-carotene).
Vitamin K: 684% of the RDA.
Vitamin C: 134% of the RDA.
Vitamin B6: 9% of the RDA.
Manganese: 26% of the RDA.
Calcium: 9% of the RDA.
Copper: 10% of the RDA.
Potassium: 9% of the RDA.
Magnesium: 6% of the RDA.

Then it contains 3% or more of the RDA for Vitamin B1 (Thiamin), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Iron and Phosphorus.

This is coming with a total of 33 calories, 6 grams of carbs (2 of which are fiber) and 3 grams of protein.

Kale contains very little fat, but a large portion of the fat in it is the omega-3 fatty acid called alpha linolenic acid.

Given the incredibly low calorie content, kale is among the most nutrient dense foods in existence. Eating more kale is a great way to dramatically increase the total nutrient content of your diet.

Very true, but it is not the conversion of starches into sugar. When you leave the kale in the field very long at very low temperatures (not luke warm like here) the kale even when fully ripened will continue to produce dextrose. So: the longer in cold weather the better. This process only works in the living plant so the "frost bite" can not be substituted for by putting in the freezer...

Yes, try with some smoked gammon or lounza cooked in it together with a slice of prokbelly (smoked or not). Potatoes should be small ones, slowly fried and with a touch of sugar to give them a crust....

Oh come on, Kale, really? How about a grapes, olives, oranges? Kale grows like a weed in Poland, it survives even snow. But to be honest I know why you search for Kale - it's very healthy and its tasty. Does it grow in England? I dont believe it can grow in Cyprus, unless under some experiment, indoor with AC on:)

Wikipedia tells me:
Kale is known in South Africa (borecole) , the USA, the UK (curly Cale, green cabbage) Switzerland (Federkohl), France (chou frisé), Spain (col crespa), Italy (calvolo ricio,r calvolo nero) and many others.
It is believed that it originates from Eurasia, spread all over Europe and then was "exportt" by the British and Dutch....
