Paphos Storm - Friday 13th October 2006

Postby KateSzell » 02 Jun 2015 13:22

Hello Everyone.
I'm looking for film of the flood and horrible weather that caused a mudslide and flood through the corallia Beach Hotel back in October 2006. It's for a TV programme I'm helping to make. Does anyone have any footage hiding away on an old camcorder? Be great to hear from you, if you do!
Many thanks,
Kate

Hi Alan, Memory man and Streets,

Thanks for the replies - we've spoken to the lady who filmed the YT clip. I'm just wondering if anyone has anything else. We've been told there was a pole up of cars outside the Corallia Beach Hotel the day after - and also that there were huge hailstones. If anyone has any film of it, it'd be great.

And if anyone, by any miraculous chance, knows who "worliegirl" is see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReWjONBHN48), I'll be really, really happy!

My car was badly damaged by the hailstones and resembled a golf ball but I have lost the photos sorry!

There was a photo on here of the water coming down Polis Road, outside the Mitsubishi garage. I am sure there were also photos taken of the damage done at the beach in Coral Bay.

Most of us stayed in during the storm as there was water everywhere and our properties were being threatened with being flooded. Loads of mud and large stones on the roads.

An article from the Sun newspaper.

Hols Brits flee freak mudslide

Image

A BRITISH family cheated death after a freak mudslide destroyed their holiday hotel as they sat eating breakfast.
Kelly Bates, husband Mark and daughter Courtney, 11, were swept away by the avalanche of sludge but managed to scramble to safety.

The brave family then helped rescue fellow holidaymakers and hotel workers buried in the flooded carnage.

Kelly, 35, of Folkestone, Kent, was in Cyprus for her brother Shane’s wedding when the raging river of mud struck at the beach resort of Coral Bay in Paphos yesterday.

She said: “We are all lucky to be alive. One minute we were eating breakfast and the next we were swimming in a swirling torrent of water and mud.”

Hours of torrential rain sparked the landslide which swept away kids on sunbeds and demolished the first two floors of the four star Corallia Hotel.

Around 100 Brits were affected. Miraculously no one was killed or seriously hurt although several people needed treatment for cuts and shock.

Mark, 36, added: “It was like a mini tsunami ripping through the building. I can’t believe no one drowned.”

A local married couple in a car were swept away in the flood in Kissonerga that day. A huge air, land and sea search was launched. The lady's body was recovered shortly afterwards but unfortunately his body wasn't located for a long time not far from the scene of the tragedy.

It was a few days later, not on the Friday.

Alan it happened on that Friday 13th October 2006, it's my partner's village and he and his uncles were involved in the rescue and knew the family concerned so remember it all too clearly!

Regarding the tragedy at Kissonerga, I seem to remember that it was several days later that the mans body was found, about a mile down stream from the bridge.
The night of the storm I had been to a committee meeting in Kato Paphos and we got into the car outside noticing that the sky was a menacing black colour. The storm broke as we were driving back to Tala with great ferocity. Torrential rain, hail stones and day turned to darkness. The flooding of the roads happened very quickly. The old road from the motorway to the hospital turn off ( long before the present roundabout was built there) was badly flooded, and the Polis Road was like a raging torrent of water, picked out by my headlights. The road up from Viofos to Tala had large deep flooded sections. In Kamares we had several landslides and a piece of road way was partially washed away.
A raging torrent of water swept under the bridge in Tala, sweeping away most of the gardens of several new houses backing on to the watercourse.
It was night to remember.

The poor man's body was found a long time after Kili, longer than 7 days, unfortunately the power of the water had washed it further down towards the sea and it was trapped in undergrowth.

The orphaned children have coped admirably under the circumstances from what I've been told.

ON the Monday I took friends to the airport ETD Pegeia at 1900hrs, ETA at the airport 1945hrs. It was pouring with rain until we got to Pafos and was completely dry at the airport. Returning from the airport ETD 2000hrs, in the dry, I returned through Kissonerga and passed over the flooded bridge in question, we all stopped for 20 seconds to let the vehicle in front get through the water at the bridge.

I arrived at Pegeia at 2100hrs, soaked by the rain on the short walk from our drive to our front-door.

I did not go out of our house except to sweep away water and debris on the Friday, it was too dangerous on the roads.

We Cannot Mess with the Environment with Impunity

THE TORRENTIAL rain that has hit the Paphos district several times over the past few weeks has caused a host of problems ranging from mudslides to flash floods, which on Monday resulted in human tragedy.

There had been warning signs just over a couple of weeks ago, when tourists holidaying at Coral Bay were lucky to escape with a few cuts and bruises after a mudslide ripped through their hotel. A Cypriot couple was not so lucky on Monday night, when their car was hit by a mudslide and pushed over the side of a bridge – the woman’s body was found on Tuesday while rescue teams were still searching for her husband yesterday afternoon, although the chances of finding him alive seem non-existent.

Thanks - sounds quite horrid! I don't suppose any of you have any idea who might have taken the film in this clip - or who "John and Ve" are (mentioned in the description)? Or even where the film was taken? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5JU1_4eJWY

And if you suddenly remember that you have a bit of film of ghastly weather/ mudlides in October 2006, do let me know!

Many thanks to you all,

I was staying locally and had walked to the shop with a friend to get candles and water as the power was out, on the way back I spotted the car that had been engulfed by the water and tried to help.

I was pulled back by my friend and an off duty police man as the water level suddenly rose and could do nothing.

The car was then pushed sideways against the barrier and again the water level rose and large pieces of debris started washing through line large oil drums and wood, the barrier then gave way and the car went over.

It was like a Hollywood film but real!!!

I still unfortunately remember the day too well.

RIP.
