I just had two Solar Panels fitted to heat water to flow through an existing Heat Exchange Unit and that cost 1,524 Euro's for the Panels and modified pipework. I have on order a Solar operated pump, a Solar Panel and voltage regulator which cost about £130. The original Heat Exchanger and pipework was about £1,000 and was piped into our oil fired boiler but became too expensive to use. I can't tell yet how efficient it will be but once I get the Solar Pump up and running it should cost nothing to run. We also bought a Thermal pool cover to retain the heat over night.

Mick,

Same here, I have often wondered why there are no covered pools here. A few years back when stationed at Akrotiri, the station welfare (PSI) had a French sliding type of conservatory structure constructed over the station pool. It is a rigid structure that slides back when not required.

I have been doing a little research into 'poly tunnels' and whether I could install one over my pool. Broadly, I envisaged the hoops to be stainless steel and placed into stainless ferrules in the coping stones along each side of the pool. Lifting them out of the ferrules and folding back when not required.

Bit of a pipe dream at the moment, but that along with solar panel heating (water type) and solar (PV) panels for a suitable pump would ease running costs and prolong the period of use of the pool throughout the year.

Jim B, interested in your pump setup on order, could you give details please?

many thanks

Mick

I ordered the below items from Amazon though they are available on Ebay. I already have a DAB electric pump to the Heat Exchanger which works fine but I want to put the Solar Pump in Parallel with it. The Pool Pump is also Solar Powered and is in parallel with an electric pump which can pump the pool water through the Heat Exchanger. I'll let you know how it works after I get it installed though the parts won't arrive until the end of February.

I did look at a telescopic Conservatory type Pool Cover a couple of years ago but the prices were frightening.

darrow,

Yes, probably very expensive, no what I envisage is simply a poly tunnel over the pool in October time and remove it probably in May. I realise it won't be as pretty as those French one's but an awful lot cheaper!

Research show's that there is at least one UK company supplying poly tunnels for pools. Too late for this year but I will be back to the UK more often this year (new grandson in April) so will engage with companies. I am pretty sure I could source the stainless hoops and locating ferrules here on island, so simply require the poly tunnel. maybe the material could be UV resistant, I do see poly tunnels here, and maybe a nice tinted colour; either way it will have to be functional rather than wishing to win a beauty contest!

Any thoughts from anyone?

Two thoughts from me.... You will have to make absolutely sure the Poly tunnel is absolutely gale proof as we get some very windy storms during Winter.

You also need to make sure that the polythene used ids up to the sunlight here. It destroy many plastics.
