Car insurance on an imported car

Postby Stu&Gill » 29 Jun 2016 08:28

As mentioned in other posts I am bringing my Golf over when we move to Cyprus permanently in November
I will organise my UK insurance to cover me for a holiday trip and I understand I can drive it on UK plates for 3 months
But do I also need Cyprus insurance as soon as it arrives at Limmassol in order to MOT the vehicle and register it in Cyprus which I intend to do as soon as possible after we arrive
Thanks Stuart

Stuart - where did you find this.

I read somewhere it says 6 months.

I am unsure where you can find out how long Cyprus resident you can drive a UK registered vehicle in Cyprus

I just Googled it and I think the link was to an old post on CyprusLiving!

My understanding is you can drive a UK car here for 3 mths and then there is an option to renew for another 3 mths but after that the car must be registered in Cyprus

Makes sense as I think that is very similar to the UK...although the local Polish builders don't seem to worry!....that is not a racist remark!...they probably go home every 6 mths and get another 6 mths when they come back

When you import a car you must have local insurance before it would be released from the bonded warehouse. The importer will give you documentation to take to your local customs office within 14 days and they in turn will give you a document allowing you to drive on the roads.

There will be an end date on that last document. Nicosia will in the meantime contact you requesting various documentation. If the end date is due to expire and you have not had the formal approval from Nicosia, then you can go back to the local customs office and get an extension to the document allowing you to drive on the roads. You must have a valid insurance at the time of each renewal. As long as you have not had a final decision from Nicosia you can go back as many times and get an extension. In theory there is no time limit. I drove my car for just under a year on UK plates.

In the UK a British Resident cant drive a foreign registered car. If you are caught the car is confiscated.

Jim

We use Status. on the road to harbour, just past the back of the Roman Hotel. I think Fitzgerald estate agent is nearby. our insurance with accidental damage and legal liability is less than €183. it will depend on your own circumstances of course! English company underwritten by Lloyds. We stayed with Ab******* for car insurance, because that was cheaper.

Found Abbeygate to be the best for car Ins and Top Quotes (above Softop) easily the best for House Ins.

S&G. When I brought my car over several years ago it was covered by a UK ins policy. Went to Abbeygate and insured the car using the VIN, that enabled me to get an MOT and then register with the Govt dept. A Reg number was allocated so I could get new plates and then went back to Abbeygate to be issued with a newer cover note.
Abbeygate were very helpful and explained the sequence as it's easy to get things the wrong way round.

Just this minute had an email from Gan Direct offering a free courtesy car in case of a breakdown or accident.

Might be worth giving consideration to.

Gan Direct offer an online quote service.

Yes I did get that email also, but I did ask for a quote on my items, no reply as yet, Top Quotes did reply and in fact very helpful, they called me on my phone and explained what the quote involves, unfortunately hardly any difference from my insurer at present, that I think is too high.

Edit had a reply from Gan Direct and also Top quotes neither were really any cheaper than my Insurers at present, in fact Gan use the same Insurers (they are just agents) AIG no point in moving really, but will continue to find a quote that is worth the change. Although it is not all about quotes, service and reliability in paying claims is far more important I feel.
