Can I( grow a fuchsia in Cyprus

Postby Cheshire Lad » 03 Oct 2011 19:22

I know that it sounds barmy but.....I have a fuchsia bush given to me many years ago by my late father and for sentimental reasons, I've taken a cutting and regrown it wherever I've moved to within the UK.

I suppose the at the 2 questions are:
1. Am I allowed to bring a cutting into CY and
2. Would it grow in Cyprus's climate.

Any advice welcome.

fusias very difficult to grow here.i grew them from cuttings for years in the uk with great success. But here a different ball game, early summer they are fine but will not survive the july august heat, not even out of the direct sunlight in the shade outside. The only way i have managed with mine is to move them indoors in the coolest part of the house then they should be ok.
But play safe when you move them inside and take some cuttings to grow on for next year if the worse happens.

Good advice by Flybynight but I had an Aunt who had the type that grow tall rather than the hanging sort you get here in baskets and they did well in very shady areas under trees and come back each year. May depend on which type of Fushia it is.

I've found that Fuchsias die if left in the beautiful hanging baskets you buy them in because the baskets get too hot in the sun here and cook the roots, in the shade and in the ground they survive.
