I much prefer a quieter venue, not sitting on the edge of a major road junction with traffic lights! :-q

Selective hearing is hard-wired into male DNA.

It has to be that way, otherwise our eardrums would wear out from over-utilization B-)

Purely to be pedantic, I wonder why the owner called the new restaurant Akropolis and not Acropolis? The official transliteration of ακρόπολη is Acropolis. Of course, he/she is entitled to call it whatever they like, but it reminds me of a conversation I had with a GC when we moved here 20 years ago. He said that Greeks in general, and Cypriots in particular, were notoriously bad at spelling (in their own language). Not surprised, really, considering the struggle I had at learning the language!

There isn't a letter "C" in the Greek alphabet so by rights it should be written as Akropolis

Good point Julie, particularly if Greek fonts are being used.

We sometimes find customers spell their own names different ways. They may for instance sign off an email as Costas, but utilise kostas in their email address itself.

As Louise says the sign says " ACROPOLIS. "

With regard to being on a main road... What about all those on the edge of the TOTK's road. They seem to manage all right.

The Polis road is very busy Trev that restaurant is on the most nosiest junction in town, main problem is trucks and large vehicles starting to pull away uphill towards Polis the noise is horrendous, I sincerely hope the new venture does well and I will try it out but I fear sitting outside will not be comfortable, inside maybe OK..

Called into the Acropolis Tavern this morning for a nosey. The menu is not too full and a decent International menu. Very nice inside and to be honest if sitting outside there was very LITTLE traffic noise it is far enough away. We were offered free coffee whilst we browsed. Lots of free parking.

The only problem would be when exiting if you want to turn RIGHT as it is so close to the lights. So turn left then come back. Easy peasy. :)

The prices seemed very reasonable too. Woth popping in for a coffee to check it out they are open for business.

Must say, the menu , looks quite mundane and unexciting. Typical taverna fare - not that I'm knocking that. As always, it's up to the quality of the food, the service and the ambience.

Carrot - I posted on an earlier thread that the resto was called Acropolis but someone later in the thread "corrected" me.

Julie - it doesn't matter that the Greek language doesn't have a letter C, it's the target language in a transliteration that matters. In this case, the Greek K in Ακρόπολη is a "soft" K, which is transliterated as a C. That is why, say, Φικάρδος, with a hard K in the middle, becomes Fikardos, rather than Ficardos. Lecture over for today. (-|

Jeff, thanks - but I don't need any Greek lessons.... I did my studying both before and after I came to live in Cyprus ;)

It's a bad sign though if owners have to change the way of spelling just for their target audience. It's not going on my list of "must do's"

Has no-one else spotted that if the outside signage says 'Akropolis', the menu is spelt 'Acropolis'.

I've noticed that Cypriots often mix the 'k' and 'c' when it comes to names, without any apparent concern.

Lloyd

And sometimes even an 'X' as in Xristos/Xristina/Xronia -who are we to even begin to understand the quirks of a foreign language or alphabet?!! Just when you think you've cracked it a curved ball comes your way and disproves all you thought was correct Greek - or Paphian!!

The English language can be just as confuddling for beginners too!

If we are going to enjoy wine with a meal , we often drink the house wine if it is from the Kolios or Vasilikon wineries.

Don't know what their house wine is, but at 10 euros for half a carafe I don't know that we will be inclined to find out!

At our 'local' taverna just 100 meters along the road from there , a whole carafe of Kolios wine is only 8 euros. Most tavernas are somewhere between 8 - 12, so 10 for only half is not going to win our regular patronage.

Well, rather than worrying about the spelling, we went in for a meal last night. Yes, the food is as you'd expect but well executed. We had, village salad, 4 dips (complimentary), pitta bread and were offered more after I scoffed it all. My wife had the pork chop whilst I had the sheftalia. Both were nice and sensible portions. Both were €9 each. Total bill with a bottle of water and two diets cokes was €30.50.
Inside it' quiet plain but smart, all white walls with some nice black and white photos and a very warm fire. No traffic noise all. Parking at the rear is a gravel surface but nice and level. There was an error on the bill but it was corrected straightaway. Overall very nice and for what we ate and drank, pretty much the same as our local, The Olive Tree in Polemi, but more modern, warmer and comfier chairs, so worth the 10 minute drive whilst The Olive Tree is closed.
