Hip Operation

Postby amber » 21 Jun 2011 18:51

My husband has been diagnosed with acute osteoarthritis of his left hip in Greece and was advised a hip replacement/resurfacing was necessary. He is returning to Paphos in July.

Can anyone who has had a recent hip operation please PM me as even though he is covered by the Cyprus Health Scheme he requires treatment fairly quickly as he is off on his travels again next February?

What care/treatment eg physiotherapy would he need after the operation? Would it be a good idea to stay in a ground floor apartment after the operation (ours is 2 flights up a staircase)?

We do not have private health insurance.

Just wondered if anyone had any idea of 'waiting times' at the General

Many thanks

hip replacment

I have recently had a hip replacement, and I will be quite honest with you, it has been the worst time of my life. Perhaps if I had not been a nurse, it would have been better. I did not have private insurance, and because the onset of the arthritis was very quick, I could not wait the 12/18 months I ws quoted at the General I had to pay approx 9,000 euros. I had the operation in the Iasis Clinic how I came out of there without a major infection I do not know, but I did. Please don't think that once the operation has been done, you will be OK, it is now 4 months since I had my op, and yes, the hip that was replaced is fine, but the other hip, which obviously had a lot of pressure on it is very painful.
If you intend to have the op done in UK, there has been a recent article in the Daily Mail, regarding the prosthetic hip manufactured by De Puy, has been withdrawn from use as they were faulty!!!!!
If you need any more info, please either PM me of e-mail [email protected] or phone 26932971

Hip Operation

Postby amber » 22 Jun 2011 09:38

Thanks for the speedy response - very useful information, especially about the time it takes after the operation to recover.

So sorry you are having a lot of pain - it doesn't help that the other hip is now causing problems.

We have some past experience with the major private clinics in Paphos, so we may have to visit one of them if Paphos General decides an operation is necessary but tell us there is a wait for it.

Your information on the De Puy prosthetic hip has been noted - thanks

Kind regards

I had a total hip replacement at the Iasis also, absolutely no problems at all, in fact I do not even have a scar, it did though take at least two years to actually get over the operation regarding my fitness, my fault of course, but the new hip is pain free and is this is the real reason of course you have this really major operation, your new hip joint will never feel as your old hip did, I still for instance cannot clip my toe nails on that side, it always feel vulnerable and I feel very conscious of falling, I should have lost at least a couple of stone in weight.

Have to say and apart from the awful food in the Iasis treatment for me was first class, more like a hotel than a hospital, certainly glad it is now over but the Iasis was not an unpleasant stay.

Waiting times at the general are not as long as the UK they told me there come back in six years!

At the Iasis 24 hours :!:
