Thyroxin tablets - possible to buy over the counter?

Postby juliesewell » 30 Dec 2011 11:05

Hi

A friend of ours arrived on holiday for a week on Wednesday afternoon and realises she's left her Thyroxin tablets at home. She's supposed to take them daily and wants to know if it's possible to get them over the counter at a pharmacy.

I've checked the Medication price lists but don't see Thyroxin listed so wonder if it goes by another name here.

Can anyone shed some light on this before I go down to the tourist area to visit her?

Thanks!

Have a look for the name Eltroxin. That's the old UK trade name, and probably still used here.

Hi,

They are called Euthyrox (Levothyroxine sodium) for underactive. Think you can buy them over counter but if you are stuck I can give you some but I am in Paphos.

Thanks Pam

Have found those listed and looks like they probably can be purchased here.

Big Ears - couldn't locate Eltroxin on the list.

Will take her along to the Chemists in Limassol and see what they say. I don't think she should be without them for a whole week...

Thanks to CL for the fast response. I knew I could rely on you for coming back quickly.

You can buy Thyroxin tablets in any Pharmacy over the counter without a prescription and it is very cheap.

Dilyon

They are for an underactive Thyroid which usually occurs after surgery or as in my case nuclear medicine to cure an overactive Thyroid. The Thyroid basically controls your metabolism.

FYI at our chemist 100mg is €4.23 for 100 tabs and 50mg are €4.04 for 100 tabs.

HTH

You are being robbed by your pharmacy
The listed pharmacy price is: 100mg is €4.03 for 100 tabs and 50mg are €3.85 for 100 tabs. Here is the link: http://www.cyprusliving.org/drugsel.html and that's the price my friend paid today at a pharmacy in Potamos Germasoyia, Limassol.

Thanks again for the replies. At least my friend is now sorted for the remainder of her holiday....

To reassure everyone - all medications, except for psychiatric medications and controlled drugs can be bought over the counter in Cyprus. Their generic names may be different but the pharmacists are all highly trained and will be able to offer you a suitable alternative to the drugs you know. Some people think this is a bad thing but I think it is very good. The pharmacist is as medically trained as a General Practitioner and more than capable of advising and offering precautions regarding drug interactions. It just saves the time and expense of a GP visit in my mind. Of course, if you need examination or investigations towards a diagnosis you will still need to see a GP.
