Psychiatrist / Psychotherapist

Postby gisela » 30 May 2010 14:03

In behalf of a friend,
I ask if anybody can recommend a psychiatrist and /or a psychotherapist for somebody with depression.
The thing lasts for years now and is/was ''treated'' mainly with various kinds of drugs. Meanwhile, my friend and also his family don't have the financial capabilities anymore to pay again and again for every visit at a psychiatrist and the drugs without seeing any tendency to improve.
Please, only serious answers and no offers from institutions, who just offer things for a lot of money!! Thanks!
We really need help and the financial capabilities are nearly exhausted.

Hello Gisela,

I am sorry t hear of your friends problems with depression. It is indeed a misunderstood and neglected area of care. I am a trained mental health nurse and have found out that there is little in the way of support for these illnesses in Cyprus.

Without paying privately I'm sorry to say that there is only the option of the general hospital psychiatric care to offer. And that is only available if your friend is entitled to NHS care in Cyprus. She/he would need to be in receipt of a state pension in the UK or have paid into social insurance in Cyprus through employment.

I hope they do receive the care they need.

Thanks Theresa, it is a big problem in Cyprus indeed.
Main thing would be to find a competent person, who not just prescribes drugs and lines his pockets.

There is a therapist holding sessions at least once a week (Tuesday I think) at the Verumedica health centre in Chlorakas.

I'm sorry I don't have the number though but I know someone who was going regularly.

But I think that is a payable service and the lady explains that funds are in short supply.

I have no idea of the cost Teresa but the info may be of use to someone else - can't think where it'd be free except at the General if the person qualifies like you said.
It may not be as expensive at Verumedica as you would imagine, no harm in the lady asking anyway.

Yes funds are in short supply, but he can pay something, again,
main thing is a competent person. He's ''travelling'' from one psychiatrist to the other for years now. Depression is a real serious problem, so he urgently needs someone very reliable.

Gisela the person I knew who was seeing the therapist was in the same situation so I'm sure they could help.

Good Luck to your friend
