Just wondered if anyone has had this procedure carried out recently and who they had to see eg did they have to see a doctor first?

We decided to go 'private' and got three quotes for having both ears syringed.

One clinic where you saw a consultant ENT surgeon= €50.00 who would carry out the treatment.

Next stop was a Clinic where you had to register first for an initial fee of €15.00. The charge for consultation including ear syringing was €35.00, so on this occasion it would cost €50.00 altogether. Not sure if the ear syringing would have been carried out by a doctor or a nurse.

Third stop was a GP who carried out the procedure for €25.00.

We always shop around for any type of work, and it appears that it pays to do so even when looking for medical treatment.

Also had to have a blood test done and that price varied from €20.00 - €35.00 just to have the blood test (ie the results were not discussed with a doctor afterwards). That was done at a different clinic!

As Mike previously posted syringing is not carried out very often in the UK any more because it comes with its own problems.

The best, easiest and cheapest way to clear ears is to buy some hydrogen peroxide 6% from the pharmacy (about € 1.17 cents for a bottle). That's the only strength they do here. Then you dilute some down to 2% by adding a capful to 3 capfuls of tap water in another small bottle. Put a small amount in the ear and lie down with the ear uppermost for about 5 - 10minutes. You will hear a little fizzing noise which is normal. Then gently wipe the ear canal out and I'm sure you will feel a big difference.

If you dilute the hydrogen peroxide down to 1% (one capful to 5 of tap water) and keep that in another bottle it is a brilliant mouthwash, cleaning the mouth and gums and gently whitening the teeth at the same time. It can also be used to clean any cuts and abrasions safely, clear up pimples and there are also uses for household jobs.

Years ago a lady GP told me to use peroxide under the arms instead of a deodorant, particularly after shaving or applying removal cream.

Usually I use a product called Otex which is Hydrogen Peroxide based and which most times works.

I few months back I could not shift the blockage so after a couple of days softening with warm olive oil I went to the Blue Cross. The ENT doctor said that they do not syringe these days so used her machine which sucked the wax out. First nothing happened then after about 30 seconds there was a pop and I could hear again. On reflection, knowing the sensitive nature of the ear, surely this must be more harmful than syringing?

Not having lived in the UK for over 10 years we are not familiar with their treatment for stubborn ear wax, but having seen doctors in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Crete and now in Cyprus they all use an ear syringe to remove wax.

Similarly when I worked in the NHS there were many x-ray procedures that were no longer carried out,but when I have worked overseas the doctors still requested them, so I had to go along with what the doctor wanted - no good saying they don't do it in the UK any more!

Yet another clinic has three methods of ear wax removal, depending on the severity at a charge of €20.00. They all recommend using drops/olive oil before carrying out the procedure.
