Motorcycle Helmet Camera

Postby P.villas » 30 Sep 2015 09:30

Does anyone know where I can buy a helmet camera in Cyprus and any recommendations on make or model would also help, looking for a reasonably cheap one, I've tried a google search but no joy so far.
Thanks
Neil.

I have Mobius action cams in both my cars. They are tiny and unobtrusive. You can get a helmet or handlebar mount (and a waterproof housing if you are thinking of using it in the rain or when swimming). Picture quality is full HD. You will however have to buy on line - https://www.joovuu.com/gb/action-cameras/14-mobius-action-camera.html. If the idea appeals, then don't forget to order an SD mini card. 32 gb is ideal giving about two hours recording.

I am a big believer in dashcams, problem here is the heat, both mine failed last week, the manufactures E-Prance said they went well beyond the temperature operating mode, no doubt some are better than other makes, be warned on this, I have sent for two more of different makes, we will see how they stand up to the heat on Cyprus..especially through windscreens..

I bought my first Mobius in February. It has been on the windscreen ever since and is still working.

I have checked several makes of dash-cams, all have maximum operating temperatures Graham, about 40c max, I would imagine most cars left in the sun gets at least that high and I suspect even higher, you may have been lucky, me unlucky, trying two different makes this time, and I am keeping the packaging too.

May try some sort of heat deflection see if that helps, removing the cams every time you stop is a real pain even if they un-clip easily.

Ours worked perfect for nine months, but when it gets hot here it gets very hot, not sure what the answer is, I did ask for advise before I bought the E-Prance's all reports said just how reliable they were (Amazon), they maybe operating in the UK conditions.

You can read about these cameras in the motoring section, they all work more or less the same regarding operation and setting up, I feel they are a must driving here, already caught two accidents on ours, one was with my car, when video evidence was offered the lady never argued who caused the accident, for this one incident it has saved me a lot of money, probably, so they are well worth the asking price, and to be honest now ours have both failed we feel vulnerable driving around town.

We bought three of these dashcams recently and cannot fault them. I bought the brand on the basis of their great Amazon reviews: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mio-538-InCarCam-Accident-Recorder/dp/B00JYBH1C6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1443657442&sr=8-1&keywords=Mio+MiVue+538+InCarCam+GPS+DVR+Dashcam+HD+Car+Journey+Accident+Recorder

They work perfectly every time, even having been left in the blazing sun. It only takes a couple of seconds to unclip the camera from the screen mount, and two seconds to put it back on. I try to remember to do this whenever I leave the car facing into sun, but sometimes (often) I forget. Notwithstanding, they work every time. It's occurred to me that if the manufacturer used white plastic instead of black they wouldn't be inclined to get so hot.

In every other respect these are nice pieces of kit. Very easy and intuitive to programme. I had ours hard-wired into the car by the car electrics place in Tremithousa. That way the wiring routes via. the fuse box and the camera turns on automatically on start-up. Think it was about €30 per vehicle.

I take your point, but mine are mounted just above the air conditioner outlet which keeps them sufficiuently cooled. The Mobius has an external heat sink, so you could add an additional heat sink with a little heat transfer paste if you have a problem with overheating. This has been one of the most continually hot summers I can recall and still no problems yet.... :)

Yes I did think of doing that Graham about April time, but apart from removing the cameras and putting them in a cool box I feel this just may become an inconvenience, I guess I was unlucky, this time I have chosen two different makes of dashcams, will see how I go regarding reliability, fortunately they are not overly expensive and as posted that can save you a lot of money...

cheers.

Peter unless you have the sticky pad type they all have the rotary tightening wheel, what I was referring to is the slot on the camera, both mine broke taking them off the mount, super glue did the trick..it seems they get brittle with the heat here, or should I say both mine did..after that I just took the lot off suction pad with them.

I recommend a Go Pro Hero camera which is what I use with a Go Pro Helmet mount. Once stuck on the helmet it will not come off!
That's the trouble with buying any of the cheaper camera's, the SJ 4000 looks good on paper for the price you pay and all the extra
mounts you get but, my buddy has just bought one and a proper one not one of the Chinese copies off ebay! after only a few weeks,
he has already broken some of the mounts, had the camera work itself loose and fall off his motorcycle, when the camera was mounted on his rear fender.
the quality of the video is washed out colour's and far inferior quality to the Go Pro Hero camera I'm using.
The sound quality is suspect as well as far as picking up the lovely sound of his Harley Davidson it sounds like a buzzing vibrating noise
instead of the deep throat roar of a Harley with a Vance and Hines Exhaust which is picked up by the Hero Camera.
You get what you pay for!
To save money Go for an older Go Pro rather than the very latest version, you need at least 720p 60 frames per second to record good footage!
better to record in 1080p Full Hd 60 Frames per second.
Also budget for extra batteries, helmet mount, battery charger, although you can charge from the PC it makes more sense to use a dedicated charger.
price of Micro SD Cards I use 32GB and have two of them.
I know they sell them in the Paphos Mall and Paphos Computers but whether I can mention these places I don't know?
check out the video section of CyprusLiving to see the quality of the footage recorded.
Good luck Cliffy Amo.

Cliffy hello, at this point may I thank you for the great video uploads, always take a look, and wished I still had my BMW..

OK my problem with both car cams was not the mounts it was a software problem, the manufactures info was due to excessive heat inside the cars windscreen, they told me 40c max, well we all know this can and does in summer rise higher than that, they did not offer a refund of any kind or a replacement for both E-Prance cameras, both mounts did break because I tried to save them by putting the car cams in the glove box, this was a mistake as the mounts in the end gave up, but I managed to super glue them back together..

New replacements on the way, different make this time, with the hope they at least last longer than the last two that I bought from Amazon, I am keeping the packaging this time just in case.

Also both camera had class 10 64MB Micro cards, the cameras performed very well while they worked, 1080p HD video and super night time recordings, one did save me on a recent insurance claim with video evidence, and on this point they are most certainly worth the money.

Thank you all for all the info, I'll now look into buying one of the above recommendations on-line.
I'm perplexed as to why nobody actually sells these cameras in Cyprus as there seems to be quite a demand for them.
Many thanks
Neil.

You can buy in Cyprus from several outlets, here is just one on line..

http://shop.piperaris.com/offers/specia ... ogger.html

But it is easy enough to buy from say Amazon and they arrive fairly fast.

Just received one of our new dash cams, initially not impress, picture quality is poor compared to my last models E-Prance, very tricky to set up, tiny screen does not help, it works is all I can say about this model, I hope the other I've ordered is a lot better than this....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00K ... Asin_Title

Do not bother with this model..although the on line help was and is excellent, answered within a few hours.
